Freeport, Grand Bahama – As part of its ongoing commitment to help young people in the community become better off, Scotiabank recognized and rewarded the stellar performances of two young athletes.
The Bank announced the Scotiabank Most Outstanding Athlete award recipients – the top male and female performer at the recently held National High School Track & Field Championships were revealed and each presented a trophy.
Quanisha Marshall, student at Bishop Michael Eldon School, was awarded the Scotiabank 2016 Most Outstanding Female Athlete award. Marshall set a new record at 2.14.62 when she won gold in the 800m. She also won silver in the 400m.
Kendrick Thompson, from Tabernacle Baptist Christian Academy, is the Scotiabank 2016 Most Outstanding Male Athlete. Thompson secured quite a few gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 110m hurdles and high jump.
“For years, Scotiabank has supported the premier high school track and field event – the National High School Track & Field Championships,” said Maxine Seymour, Manager of Public & Corporate Affairs, Sponsorships & Philanthropy.
“Our country has an amazing reputation when it comes to excellence in track and field and the Nationals were an incredible display of talent from our young athletes, particularly Quanisha Marshall and Kendrick Thompson whom we celebrate,” Seymour continued.
Both athletes were accompanied by their proud coaches and principals to the special award ceremony held at Scotiabank’s Freeport branch. Norris Bain, 2nd Vice President and Sandra Laing, Special Projects Officer represented The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA).
Marshall and Thompson participated in the 45th CARIFTA Games in St. George's, Grenada following the Nationals. Marshall won a bronze while Thompson set a new record with his gold winning performance in the Octathlon.
Some previous Scotiabank Most Outstanding Athlete winners have included Shaunae Miller, Antonique Strachan and Lathario Collie-Minns who continue to excel athletically.
