Nassau, Bahamas – Sister-to-Sister Breast Cancer Support Group, The Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative Foundation, and the Cancer Societies in Abaco, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama and New Providence will all benefit from the funds raised at the CIBC First Caribbean’s 5th Annual “Walk for the Cure” on Sunday October 5th from Goodman’s Bay at 7 a.m.

In the lead up to the event CIBC management and staff have scheduled a multitude of team building and fund-raising events to benefit local Cancer research and care organisations. Since August, bank employees have been engaged in on and off-site fund raising activities nation-wide to add to the donations that will be raised from the “Walk for the Cure” event on October 5th.

The Bank kicked off the fundraising activities with a weekly jeans-day fundraiser, where every casual Friday until the Walk for the Cure, employees, for a small contribution, could wear jeans to work to show their support.

A dash of fun and panache was added when male-employees were invited to enter to win a, “Real Men Wear Pink” photo competition. Male employees dressed to impress in their best pink outfits and submitted a photo in exchange for a small donation. Employee votes gave Tony McCartney of the CIBC FirstCaribbean JFK branch the top honour of best-dressed-in-pink, winning a touch-screen smart phone.

The prizes aren’t just for the men, however. Weekly raffles for all employees through September give employees the chance to win prizes, courtesy of some of CIBC’s partners. These include: a 2-night stay at the Wyndam Nassau Resort, dinners for two at various Atlantis restaurants, a shallow water encounter at Atlantis’ Dolphin Cay, a 1-night stay at Sunshine Villas on Paradise Island, and many more. To date, the funds raised by various in-house initiatives is over $5,000 which will be added to the monies raised from the Walk event.

Other employee initiatives include a country-wide donation competition, where the branch and individual who inspire the highest donations from customers is recognized and rewarded. There is also a branch decoration competition to be judged by Sister-to-Sister Breast Cancer Support Group and a Saturday carwash and dollar drive. Recently, partnering with Alexandra Johnson, a local carwash business owner, bank employees hit the parking lots at Marathon Mall to offer car washes in exchange for donations, ultimately raising close to $1,000 for the cause.

Employees will piggyback on this success with a larger dollar drive on September 27th at crossroads and traffic lights near all of the CIBC FirstCaribbean locations. The drive will be themed “Spare your change to Spare a life,” and will ask drivers to donate whatever spare change is in their car coin tray to aid in the fight against Cancer.

“Walk for the Cure” event organizer, CIBC FirstCaribbean Customer Experience Manager Duquesa Dean says that she is very pleased with the participation in the fund raising initiatives, and hopes that with the added funds they can surpass last year’s $28,000 raised to reach this year’s goal of $35,000.

“The employees have joined in the events and challenges enthusiastically, we are lucky to be working with such a philanthropic team and we encourage them to keep it up and to keep signing up!” said Ms. Dean. “So far we have over 100 employees registered for the “Walk for the Cure”, and as our registration continues I know that we can exceed last year’s 260 and meet our 300 person goal.”

Ms. Dean is encouraging the general public along with bank employees to register for the walk, which will be held Sunday October 5th at 7:00 am from Goodman’s Bay to Sandals Resort and back. Registered walkers receive a T shirt and are entered to win a 2-night stay at the Hilton Hotel and a John Bull department store gift basket, to be drawn on the morning of the walk. Persons interested in registering for the “Walk for the Cure” can inquire at their local CIBC FirstCaribbean branch or email: duquesa.dean@cibcfcib.com
