LIS Student work on display at the Glory Banks Gallery Natalie Willis, a Year 13 student at LIS, who is studying her International Baccalaureate (IB) in Art had two of her pieces selected to be displayed at the Glory Banks Art Gallery at the Rand Nature Centre in Grand Bahama. Natalie who wishes to study Art in college and become a professional artist was very proud to have work selected.

Freeport, Grand Bahama – In October 2008, the Art Departments in senior high schools on Grand Bahama Island were asked to select talented students interested in taking their art to a higher level.  This group of sixteen students was then invited to attend a three-day, oil painting workshop held at the Rand Nature Centre.

International Artist, Ryan Wurmser, conducted workshops for the students and for art instructors committed to act as mentors.  Natalie Willis was chosen from Lucaya International School (LIS) and two of her oil paintings were eventually selected for an exhibition at the Glory Banks Gallery at the Rand Nature Centre.

Natalie is a Year 13 student at LIS.  She is currently taking a Visual Arts course as part of her International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, and she is only three weeks away from her final exhibition.  Natalie hopes to become a professional artist after studying in college, so having her work selected for the exhibition is helping her achieve this goal.

Natalie hoping to attend Art College Hoping to attend art college abroad, Natalie will use her selected pieces for her International Baccalaureate Art Exhibition later this month. March 30th an IB examiner will arrive on island to view Natalie's work as well as Leslie Gouthro's, a fellow IB Art student, his review will be part of their final grade. The IB Art Exhibition will be open to the public on March 25th and 26th and all students, teachers and budding artists are invited to view the work these young ladies have produced at IB standards.

Later this month an IB Art Examiner will visit LIS to view Natalie’s portfolio as well as the portfolio of Leslie Gouthro, a fellow classmate.  A visit by a professional external examiner is a required element of the IB Visual Arts course.  Natalie and Leslie, under the guidance of their teacher, Ms. Julie Hoyle, will display their works as well as discuss their portfolios and processes with the examiner.  In conjunction with the visit, LIS will host an IB Art Exhibition which will be open to the public on March 25th 26th. All students, teachers and budding artists are warmly invited to come and view the work of these two distinguished IB students.

"Natalie is a very talented student who has proven to have a high level of commitment to developing her technical skills.  Since entering LIS in Year 12, Natalie's artistic growth has been phenomenal,” said Julie Hoyle, LIS Senior Art Teacher.  “She has embraced every opportunity available to her and because of this, she will enter Art College with a definite advantage.  Natalie's dreams of being a professional artist are well underway!"

The work from the Rand exhibition will be included in Natalie’s IB Art Exhibition and will be available for sale as well. Her work will also be included in a portfolio for her University/College submission and some of her work can be viewed on the Deviant Art website.

"It was a bit nerve-wracking to do the course but I was glad that my pieces got such a positive response,” said Natalie, “the whole experience makes me feel a little less anxious about the upcoming IB exhibition with the IB examiner.  Now that I have a little practice I feel more confident and I am looking forward to exhibiting my work again."

With this current success and her first commissioned piece being completed, Natalie is truly reaching her goals.  Her family, friends and school are very proud of her achievements.
