Freeport, Grand Bahama - The citizenry of Grand Bahama Island believe that it will have to be through them doing business that the recession on the island would be eliminated!  This has been demonstrated by their overwhelming attendance at BAIC and C.O.B’s  sponsored Grand Bahama Business Empowerment Lecture Series – 2010, being held under the theme, “Recession? Let’s Do Business!”.   This series is at its half-way mark, and for the first three (3) of six weekly Thursday sessions held at Workers House, Freeport, over three hundred (300+) persons have been in attendance at each lecture series.

Between the hours 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on the past three (3) Thursday nights, this throng of enthusiastic business-minded persons sat as anxious students absorbing all the information offered by the experienced and knowledgeable presenters.  From the opening ceremonies and presentations on Thursday, 21st January, 2010, when the Honorable, Zhivargo Laing, M.P. officially gave his encouraging opening remarks and shared some of his personal business inspirations, he also announced government’s plans for consolidating the business support services of the government for better effect to the business-interested public.  Mr. Don Major, Deputy General Manager, BAIC, in his remarks made registrants aware of the value of BAIC to the business development process in our country, the background for the Business Empowerment Series, and he enthusiastically motivated them to take advantage of the opportunities available to them and defeat any negative block to their ambitions.

The first lecturer for the series, Mr. K. Peter Turnquest, chairman, Sky Bahamas Ltd., and new president of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce followed the opening speakers.  His lecture was in the area of ‘Business from the Top’, and his subject was ‘Big Business Entrepreneurship’.  His personal business experience was very well received by the students and his outline of necessary business principals required to succeed in business were gobbled-up by them.

‘Getting The Bucks For Your Bang’ was the topic for the second business lecturer, Mr. Edison L. Sumner, Director & COO, The Montaque Group, Nassau, and Deputy Chairman, Bahamas Entrepreneurial Venture Fund.   Mr. Sumner demonstrated that he was a professional in the area of business funding and his delivery style resonated with his audience.  The succeeding business person who shared his experience with the class on this night was Mr. Keith Rolle of Gizmos & Gadgets, and FDK Laminators.  His real business story was an example and inspiration to the aspiring business owners that they too could do it.

At the halfway mark of the series, Dr. Leslie Minus, inventor/educator/entrepreneur, lectured on ‘Protecting Your Intellectual Property’ from the perspective of someone who has gone through the process of having his invention patented in the United States.  He was followed by Mr. Alto DiBelardino, inventor of an escape ladder whose product was copied by a large corporation in the U.S.A. who had to pay a large settlement to Mr. DiBelardino, his shareholders and lawyers after losing a court case to him.  The evening was topped with the presentation by Mrs. Gayle Davis, Manger of Intellectual Property division of the Bahamas Registrar General, Nassau.  She was able to impart to attendees that they can easily register their business ideas and works for patent, trademark and copyright protection at the Registrar General in The Bahamas without the high cost of other jurisdictions, and within a more reasonable time frame than the U.S.A. and other countries.  Quite a number of internationally well known symbols, designs and other works are registered in The Bahamas.

Three (3) more nights remain in the series of Thursdays, 11th, 18th and 25th February.  The full series is free-of-charge to all those in the communities of Grand Bahama, and all those interested in business is invited to attend any or all sessions.  Certificates of participation will be presented to those who attend at least 75% of the sessions.

It is BAIC’s purpose through this business empowerment series to sensitize Bahamians to the business opportunities available to them now, and to encourage them to exploit these opportunities, thereby empowering them to become entrepreneurs.  Additionally, the lectures are expected to provide potential and existing business persons with an opportunity for exposure to cutting edge and proven successful business strategies, best practice and real life experiences.

The cake of entrepreneurship is being baked at the Grand Bahama Business Lecture Series 2010, it has been kneaded and is now in the oven, it should be out of the oven by the last lecture on Thursday, 25th February when the icing will be put on the cake by Dr. Wayne Thompson, guest lecturer.  It will be closed-out with a ceremony presided over by the Executive Chairman of BAIC, Mr. Edison Key, M.P., who will also issue certificates to those who qualify.

Thank you.
