FREEPORT, Bahamas - Achieving greatness through education and knowledge is the quest of the 2016 graduating class of the Bahamas Institute of Business and Technology (BIBT), who was urged Sunday to pursue and embrace knowledge and wisdom for the advancement of their lives, their country and their communities.

The Institute, established in 2009, launched Commencement Week for its 63 graduates on Sunday afternoon with a Baccalaureate Thanksgiving Service held at the St. Paul’s Methodist Church.

Frederick McAlpine, guest speaker at the thanksgiving service, stressed to the graduates the importance of the active pursuit of knowledge.

“Knowledge is a key that will unlock many doors,” he said. “The global community is a door and knowledge is a key to access the door. Knowledge opens doors and creates opportunities.

“Knowledge permits you passage through the door, but it is your attitude which determines your altitude after you would have entered in.”

McAlpine, a former senator and a political candidate for the Pineridge Constituency in the country’s upcoming General Elections, also spoke to the importance of knowledge in the affairs of State, citing the country’s recent constitutional referendum as an example.

“Too many people in our country are being destroyed for the lack of knowledge,” he noted.

“That is why we cannot advance in constitutional reform because the truth is that many people have no knowledge of what the Constitution is saying. That is why I believe that as part of our National Curriculum, we must introduce the Constitution to all Bahamians.”

He stressed that many areas of our country appear antiquated because of a lack of knowledge or will to advance our systems of government.

The graduating class of BIBT will host its President’s Awards Banquet at the Palm Pavilion of the Grand Lucayan Resort on Friday, July 15, and its 2016 Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, July 17 at the Grand Lucayan Convention Center.

Dr. Deswell Forbes, founding president of the Bahamas Institute of Business and Technology, will confer Associates Degrees on the Institutes’ graduates at the Commencement Ceremony.
