Freeport, Grand Bahama - The room was filled with excitement and anticipation and you could hear a pin drop as competition Coordinator, Anitha Cooper announced the winner of Bahamian Illustrated’s 2nd Annual High School Art Competition finalists. Students representing 6 different high schools throughout Grand Bahama participated in this year’s contest. Bishop Michael Eldon High, Jack Hayward High, Grand Bahama Catholic High, Eight Mile Rock High, St. Georges High and Sunland Baptist Academy were all represented. The event was held at 4:00pm in the Arcade of the International Bazaar on Sunday, March 25th 2012.

This year’s theme, “Bahamas Unite” motivated participants to illustrate their thoughts and vision of a united Country, regardless of our social status, color or political affiliation through Art.

“Looking at the pieces, it is clear that the students have placed an enormous amount of emphasis in the thought process before actually putting pencils and paint to paper,’’ said Mrs. Cooper. The competition was quite intense; an example of this was in the depiction of 15 year old Vernesse Henderson, second place winner and Student of Bishop Michael Eldon High School: “my drawing depicts the Bahamian people, their strength, courage and determination. I chose glue to symbolize the bond we share with each other whether young or old. Knowledge and experiences are shared and passed on from generation to generation which helps to build a stronger nation. This is also expressed in the flag droplets running from the adult's hand onto the hand of a child. Our struggles are represented by the twisting of the flag. But it's these same struggles that enable us to become stronger and more determined to overcome these obstacles. As Bahamians, we must continue to strengthen the glue that binds us with love, respect and honor.”

Executives of Bahamian Illustrated thanked all of their sponsors for making the event another huge success. This year’s sponsors include: Regional Air, Grand Bahama Port Authority, Sawyers Fresh Market, Foto Factory, Pyramid Propane Systems Services, Paradise Jewels, Imagine Graphics & Printing, T’s Perfume Depot, Quality Photography, Health Springs Community Pharmacy, Jewellery Repair, Adagio Art Studios, KG Griffiths and Associate, The Smith Family and Mr. Standerwick.
