Freeport, Bahamas -
Emancipation Day is upon us
and many are gearing up for a long weekend to celebrate August Monday
and what it means to be free. The month of August also ushers
in the end of summer for many of our youth. There are those who
are preparing for back to school, primary school, high school and even
college; then there are those who are simply preparing to get back to
school via the memories of a reunion.
The Alumni Association of the
former Freeport High School, now known as Bishop Michael Eldon School
is making final preparations for what will mark a weekend of events
scheduled to commemorate the school's 46th anniversary.
According to David Wallace,
president of the Alumni Association, the association is happy to unite
once again to celebrate the school’s heritage and offer support through
various activities marked for the occasion.
“The alumni of Freeport High
are scattered far and wide and we have sent out a clarion call for all
to come and not just celebrate with us,” said Wallace, “but to also
support the school’s ongoing projects.”
The weekend will kick off with
a Welcome Reception and Cultural Show Friday evening August 19th, commencing
at 8:00 p.m. Saturday morning August 20th, will begin bright and
early at 7:00 a.m. with a walk-a-thon to raise funds in aid of the school's
upkeep and upgrade.
Alumni Administrator, Petrona
Russell said that while the walk-a-thon will directly benefit the school,
the Warriors Beach Bash in conjunction with the annual Bernie Butler
swim meet on Coral Beach, will hopefully encourage many on-island alumni
to support BASRA a vital entity here in The Bahamas, particularly Grand
Bahama.
The highlight of the weekend
will be the old fashioned Talent Show the school was renowned for in
the ‘70s. Alumni such as Johnny Kemp, Crystal Cumberbatch-Hicks, surviving
members of Sanford and Co., David Bowen and countless others all plan
to return to make the weekend memorable.
The weekend will culminate
on August 21st with a usual church service slated at The Church
of The Good Shepherd, Pinders Point, Grand Bahama.
