Listed among the most
prevalent
diseases in Grand Bahama are Hypertension,
Diabetes, Heart Disease etc. Based on the fact that these diseases
usually correlate with lifestyle, The Grand Bahama Health Services will
be
hosting a
Community Wellness Day on
Saturday, April 24th,
2010. The event will begin at 7:00 a. with a Fun Run/Walk leaving
from the Rand Memorial Hospital.
After the walk the entire Grand Bahama community is invited to a Health
Fair
and Farmer’s Market on the grounds of the Rand Memorial
Hospital, from 8:00am-1:00pm.
The Health Fair is geared
towards encouraging the Grand Bahama Community to live healthier
lifestyles. The Day is expected to be exciting as booths will be set up
to educate the community. There will be many booths such as The Cancer
Association of Grand Bahama, the Lupus Association, Insurance
Management,
Colina Insurance, The Cancer Society, Cruzin Café Restaurant, Mr. Baker
Restaurant,
Butler’s
Specialty Foods and many others. Nurses will also be on hand to provide
Glucose,
Cholesterol, and Blood Pressure testing as well as fruit vendors will be
selling
fruits and vegetables. A Dietitian from the Grand Bahama Health
Services
will be on hand to offer healthy eating tips and advice. As a special
treat for children there will also be a bouncing castle for them to
enjoy. The Community Wellness Day was planned as a part of the
World Health Month activities under the theme “1000 Cities, 1000
Lives” the theme puts health at the center of the global dialogue
about urbanization and prevalent diseases that affects our cities.
