Freeport, Grand Bahama - Community centres are public locations where members of a community may gather for group activities, social support, public information, and other purposes. The Susan J. Wallace Community Centre provides this purpose for us, the residents of Grand Bahama Island. For two days, March 8th and 9th, the centre will host an ‘Open House’ showcasing the success of finished products that took place during classes and activities offered by the centre. To ensure a favourable outcome of the event, Susan J. Wallace Community Centre Administrator Mrs. Christine Sands-Been approached local business to assist. The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) responded to the request and presented a cheque to the centre, to satisfy the need for financial assistance aiding in the events success.

“We are very thankful and grateful to The Grand Bahama Port Authority for their generosity. This cheque will be used for our upcoming ‘Open House’, scheduled for March 8th and 9th and will be used to purchase must needed materials for our ‘Open House’,” expressed Mrs. Sands-Been during a cheque presentation held in front of ‘The Pink Building’. Mrs. Sands-Been also spoke about the centre programmes, “We provide a safe haven for the kids. Our After-School programme begins at 3:30pm and ends at 5:30pm. and we offer classes in computer, tennis, sewing, arts & craft and karate.” In addition to homework assistance, the centre also offers an adult programme, shared Mrs. Sands-Been, “offering lessons from 5:30pm to 7:00pm in computer, sewing and First Aid/CPR.”

On behalf of GBPA President, Mr. Ian Rolle, Mrs. Geneva Rutherford, GBPA Director of Community Relations presented the cheque to the Susan J. Wallace representative. “The Grand Bahama Port Authority is delighted to offer this assistance to the Susan J. Wallace After-School Programme.  Developing After-School Programmes is a key focus of The Port Authority. We feel strongly about the safety of our kids, of all ages, and it is important to have positive activities accessible, especially during the hours of 3:00pm until the time parents come home.” Mrs. Rutherford confirmed that, “The Port Authority management team is very, very keen to see After School programmes developed, by the Urban Renewal Area, by the Susan J. Wallace Centre, by churches and all public facilities that can accommodate this need. We go through out the island to assist where we can, to ensure that the programmes get off the ground and are sustained.”

Freeport, Grand Bahama - Susan J. Wallace Community Centre is a project of the City of Freeport Local Government District Council and Management Committee Member, Ms.  Natasha Darville spoke about the importance of the centre’s presence. “Programmes like these are always needed. There are many kids that live in the area that have absolutely no where to go and nothing to do, “expressed Ms. Darville, “Programmes offered by the Susan J Wallace are free and provide an opportunity for kids to get exposed to many things, things that they may not have otherwise had a chance to experience, had this centre not existed.”

The Susan J. Wallace Centre offers a safe environment with 21st century tools accompanied by experienced and qualified teachers and instructors. Programmes offered entice participants, as well as sustain their interests and the fruits of their labour will be on display for all to see at the annual ‘Open House’ scheduled for March 8th and 9th. The Grand Bahama Port Authority would like to encourage and remind parents of the Grand Bahama Island that kids are our main priority. If your child would like to partake in any of the classes offered by the centre, please call a member of staff at 352.2092 and enroll them in a healthy after school activity.
