Freeport, Grand Bahama – Special Olympics was founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) is proud of our Grand Bahama Island Athletes and lend support to the training for the upcoming 2010 National Championships, which will be held in New Providence, summer of this year.

GBPA Director of Community Relations, Geneva Rutherford, represented GBPA Executives and donated a cheque to the Special Olympics Committee of Grand Bahama in the lobby area of The Port building. “GBPA is well aware that due to the state of the economy active fundraising has been a challenge for many organizations. In spite of this, GBPA remains committed to funding impactful programmes that make a meaningful difference in our communities. We are proud to support the efforts of the Grand Bahama Island Special Olympic athletes in pursuit of their participation in the upcoming 2010 National Championships,” shared Rutherford.

The mission statement for all Special Olympians is to provide year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Grand Bahama Special Olympic Track and Field Coach Renee Russell received the cheque from GBPA on behalf of the Special Olympics Committee of Grand Bahama. “Our athletes train hard and it shows that hard work does pay off. Grand Bahama sent 40 athletes to the 2009 National Championships held in Nassau. 20 athletes attended the December 2009 Basketball Tournament in Nassau and brought home the gold medals in their divisions. Our athletes have competed in China and in 2011, we plan to compete in the Special Olympics World Summer Games hosted in Athens, Greece.” Russell showed appreciation for the donation by expressing these words, “We thank The Grand Bahama Port Authority for today’s donation. This money will be immediately used to outfit the athletes and aid in travel expenses.”

According to the official Special Olympians website: www.specialolympics.org, our athletes live by this motto, “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited would like each Special Olympian to know that we acknowledge your efforts and praise you for the hard work put forth. GBPA encourages all corporate citizens and the community to help us in our support of Grand Bahama’s Special Athletes.
