Hurricane Preparedness Benefits with Alternative Energy

Freeport, Bahamas - The future of solar power in Grand Bahama requires increase dedication about alternative energy products.

During an appearance on the Focus Forward radio show hosted by the Grand Bahama Port Authority, Heath Kemp, owner of Solar Up Bahamas informed listeners about solar power and alternative energy.Kemp explained, "Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity." The Bahamas experiences 310 days of sunshine annually and nearly 8 hours of sunlight each day.Kemp confirmed "Our natural environment makes The Bahamas, particularly Bahamian businesses & homes, ideal locations to use solar power."

The audience benefited from learning about solar panels used around the world and saw how improved technology has influenced costs and designs. He reminded listeners that The Bahamas Government has mandated that by 2030 the Bahamas should be using 30% alternative power.

Kemp clarified that solar panel systems can vary from small hurricane backup systems to large industrial systems. They may be rooftop-mounted or free standing structures. He also said that solar panels can be installed to provide power to essential appliances within their businesses or homes during a loss of power during utility disruptions.

The owner of Solar Up Bahamas highlighted the benefits of the turnkey solar power packages available. He said "Our panels can provide power to items like electronic devices,computers, refrigerators, lights, air conditioning units. These are important necessities and through the use of solar panels Bahamians are able to save money year round." System generally range from 1.3kW to 4.6kW and are available at discounted prices for a limited time.

Kemp highlighted “Solar Up Bahamas offers quality and affordable options for Bahamians to benefit from the use of solar power in their homes and businesses. We want individuals to take full advantage of sunshine that translates into savings on electric bills." Through the use of the Grand Bahama Power Company's new Renewable Energy Rider rate, soon consumers will be able to sell energy they produce back to the utility company through alternative energy sources such as solar PV and wind turbines.
