KGBC CORAL GARDENS CLEAN-UP: Scores of volunteers participated in Saturday’s early morning clean-up.

Freeport, Bahamas – The Keep Grand Bahama Clean Committee’s (KGBC) first community clean-up for the year in Coral Gardens met with much success on Saturday past.

Joined by volunteers from Dominion Community Church, Access Ministries, Seahorse Urban Renewal and various other groups, KGBC committee members engaged in an early morning clean-up of loose litter throughout the small community.

“We were extremely pleased with the turnout,” expressed KGBC Chairperson, Nakira Wilchcombe.  “Of particular note was the support provided by students and teachers of Sister Mary Patricia Francis Junior High School.  It was a delight to have them join us along with so many youngsters from the various churches.”

Coral Gardens’ residents eagerly participated as well.  Several young men wholeheartedly chipped in, chopping and clearing heavy underbrush surrounding a dilapidated building.

Peridot Place resident, Marvin Evans, explained why he decided to participate. “When I saw KGBC working this morning, I was moved to join in.  Cleaning up the community is a good thing to do and a few of us decided that we’re going to monitor the area and work to keep it cleaner from now on,” he said.

RESIDENTS PITCH-IN: Coral Gardens’ residents joined along with KGBC and other organizations in cleaning up their community.

During Saturday’s event, KGBC took time out to recognize outstanding efforts of several Coral Gardens’ residents.  Special certificates were presented to: Brunelle Rolle-Strachan, ‘Best Curb Appeal’; Mr. & Mrs. Tommy Nesbitt, ‘Best Manicured Property’; and Mr. & Mrs. Ricardo Major, ‘Best Kept Residential Property’ along with ‘KGBC Coral Gardens Ambassador’.

Ricardo Major has been a Coral Gardens resident for 21 years.  “Despite what you might have heard, Coral Gardens is a safe neighbourhood,” he stated emphatically.  “I’ve been able to raise all of my children through here without any incidents.”

HEALTH FAIR IN CORAL GARDENS: Saturday’s KGBC clean-up ended with a health fair courtesy of Ross University.

Tommy Nesbitt, Diamond Coral Apartments’ landlord, concurred, but also encouraged fellow residents to do more.  “We as a community need to take pride in our own area and not rely on others like KGBC to encourage us,” he said.

According to Constable 2505 Lamardo Bowe, Lucaya Neighbourhood Policing Officer, “it was good to see such a concerted clean-up effort.  Cleaner surroundings not only promote physical cleanliness but also help to reduce sites used for criminal activities,” he said.

Pastor Mark Smith, Dominion Community Church, applauded the event for its overall success.  “So much can be accomplished by a group rather than by ourselves.  When we come together, no force can stand against us,” said Smith.

Saturday’s clean-up culminated with a health fair, led by medical students of Ross University, with residents and volunteers receiving glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol testing.  Special KGBC Coral Gardens t-shirts, breakfast and supplies were also shared with the residents.
