Saturday, 23rd January, 2010 – Freeport, Bahamas – The Keep Grand Bahama Clean Committee (KGBC) has already begun a new year of activities with its first official meeting and school visitation already under its belt.

Celebrating its fourth anniversary this year, KGBC committee members gathered to review last year’s accomplishments, and the way forward in the New Year.

“We accomplished much in the last twelve months, with the committee making great strides in getting the ‘Keep Grand Bahama Clean’ message out,” stated KGBC Chairperson, Mrs. Nakira Wilchcombe.

Last year’s school visits were a notable highlight for the group and on Monday morning, the excitement continued.  KGBC committee members dropped in on morning assembly at Freeport Primary School, accompanied by the crowd-pleasing Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) mascot, ‘Chicky’.

‘CHICKY’ & THE KIDS – As an official corporate partner of the ‘Keep Grand Bahama Clean’ initiative, Kentucky Fried Chicken participated in the school visit.

Whilst ‘Chicky’ mingled amongst the primary school students, Wilchcombe led the spirited youngsters in a catchy chant, “use a bin to put it in”.  KFC is an official corporate partner of the ‘Keep Grand Bahama Clean’ initiative.

“Let’s make ‘Chicky’ happy by putting our garbage in the bin.  Tell your Mummy and Daddy to do so too,” Wilchcombe urged.

School visitations were only one of several initiatives KGBC undertook last year.  Clean-up campaigns in Caravel Beach, Yeoman Woods and Garden Villas were also conducted in conjunction with other organizations on the island. A ‘Trash to Treasure’ art competition, amongst local junior and secondary high schools, capped off another successful year of KGBC sponsored events.

“We are pleased with what we were able to accomplish last year with the assistance of our many corporate partners and volunteers.  Nevertheless, we’re excited about the new year and the unveiling of new initiatives as we continue to spread the important message of keeping our environment clean,” Wilchcombe said.
