FREEPORT, Grand Bahama - The 6th Annual Miss St. Georges High Pageant, under the theme Gems of the Bahamas, was held this past Saturday, March 25th, 2017 at the St. Georges Gymnasium.

The showcase of beauty, brains and talent featured six contestants, representing the islands of Andros, Exuma, San Salvador, Great Inagua, Long Island and Cat Island.

The island gems took to the stage to vie for the title of Miss St. Georges High while competing in a Jaguar Pride parade and costume competition, talent competition, evening gown competition and question and answer segments.

Shining brightest among the gems was Miss Cat Island Mariah Sherman, who not only won the coveted title of Miss St. Georges High, but numerous special awards including the preliminary speech competition and knee jerking judges interview.

According to pageant committee Chairman Lenor Woodside, “The purpose of the pageant is to groom young ladies into becoming strong, independent young ladies, and helping them to recognize their purpose.”

She said one of the most rewarding parts of the pageant process is seeing how the young ladies grow and find themselves along the way.

“Initially Mariah had issues walking in heels, but it was amazing watching her transformation, knowing that the girl known as a tomboy to the school body was stepping up as a contestant,” she added.

“From the onset it was obvious that Mariah was one of the more intelligent young ladies among the bunch, who knew what she wanted and had a purpose. She knew that the idea that people had of her, as being a tomboy, would be proved wrong through the process. It was amazing to see that she was able to grow and prove to people that she was still able to act as a lady and become the queen.”

As a first time pageant contestant, Mariah said she wasn’t so sure about her decision to enter the race.

“At first I was skeptical because I was not interested in wearing dresses and makeup, but with the support and encouragement that I received, I was able to follow through,” she said.

When asked about her main focus going into the pageant, Mariah said, “In my mind I wasn’t there to win, I was just there to get better, to find myself, and that might have been the formula to success.”

The new queen said the pre-pageant events and sessions, including a sleepover and fun day, along with makeup and etiquette sessions were perhaps her favorite part of the journey.

Mariah added that she wants young girls considering the pageant to know that it takes a lot of preparation, determination and work to make it to the final night.

“I still can’t believe that I made it, I am Miss St. Georges High 2017,” Mariah said smiling.

In addition to the sash and crown, Miss St. Georges High will receive a laptop computer and $500.00.

The Miss St. George’s Pageant was inaugurated in 2010 and is open to young girls in grades 10 and 11.
