Grand Bahama Island - Cedric J. Beckles ll was the keynote speaker at the Tabernacle Awards Day on September 18th, 2009. His theme was on ' Staying Focused in High School'

Beckles said, " Staying focused in high school will not only help in school, but also in life. It will help to accomplish various goals through life. One of the keys to staying focused is to set a realistic goal to work to towards. Set goals that are reachable and that will also help you to reach your full potential. Once the goal is set, students should have check points along the way to make they are on track to reach their goal. These check points are building processes to monitor your progress towards your goal.

There are four common distractions that take students off course from reaching their goal. Beckles called them the Four F's:

1. Fear- some students are afraid to fail, others to perform, and some are just afraid of hard work.

2. Family- some students have rough family lives, and some family members are not supportive and are on a different page.

3. Fatigue- some students get mentally tried, physically tired. It is important for them to take breaks, and reset themselves so that they can stay focused on the goal.

4. Friends- students allow friends to distract them from performing, resulting in not focusing on their goal. A lot of high school students lives revolve around their friends, which clouds their minds, and their vision, resulting in not reaching their goals.

Beckles encouraged the students to not let these Four F's to distract them from reaching their goals, and to stay focused. He also talked about preparing for post high school; either college or the work force. He also advised on practicing good habits on how to stay focused and reaching a goal that one sets is very gratifying and helps with self esteem, self worth, and self satisfaction.
