Church of Ascension 2015 Spelling Challenge

Freeport, Grand Bahama - In a nail biting 13th round, 12 year old Theus Rolle of St. Paul’s Methodist College won Church of The Ascension 8th Annual Spelling Challenge.

After spelling over 200 words and 7 rounds of competition 7 spellers were unshakable! They confidently battled back and forth spelling words like: “sobriquet, opprobrious, kohlrabi, leptocercal, lepidopterist, laticiferous, lebkuchen, lachrymose, posthumous” and conquered them all.  Rounds 10, 11, and 12 yielded absolutely no eliminations.  It was truly every speller for himself.  Officials had to resort to an Unseen List when Theus nailed the victory. Competition officials said that all the spellers this year were of the highest caliber and were very well coached and prepared for the tough competition.

These 7 spellers, Celina Robinson age 12 Sister Mary Patricia, Kuvante Adderley – 12 Mary Star Academy, Troyeisha Hanna 13 St. Paul’s College, Izayah Rahming – 11 Sunland Baptist, Theus Rolle – 12 St. Paul’s College, Sellene Johnson -12 Sunland Baptist, and Miquel Sweeting -11 Sister Mary Patricia, were phenomenal.

Theus won a HP laptop computer. Second place finisher, Izayah Rahming, who walked away with a Kindle Fire and third place finisher, Celina Robinson, took home a tablet.

Notable was Celina Robinson, petite in statue, but a powerhouse.  She demonstrated enormously confidence and composure and hung in with her male comrades.  Also notable was the number of fathers in the audience supporting their children; very refreshing.

Much praise has to be given to ALL the coaches who did a splendid job. The kids could be seen using various techniques, writing on their skin with fingernails, asking for word origin and definitions. Theus was coached by Jeanette Austin, Izayah coached by Sheryl Wood, Celina and Miquel– Danicia Campbell, Sellene Johnson – Jackie Fowler, Kuvante  Adderley – Renee Hall and Troyeisha Hanna – Erica Laing

Dr. Rose McTier, Professor of Literature at College of The Bahamas was the official pronouncer; she calmly and clearly called out each word tirelessly. Chief Judge was Mr. Wayne Thompson, an experienced veteran of the CoA challenge.  He repeatedly demonstrated his mastery of the challenge rules and adeptly kept the audience knowledgeable of the proceedings.  Second and third judges were also CoA Challenge veterans; Ms. Nadine McDonald and Senator Tanisha Tynes.  The evening activities were commentated by Mrs. Petra Weekes.

The competition was held on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at Church of The Ascension Hall and was organized by the parochial body, Momentum and chaired by Ms. Freda Forbes. Revd Father Michael Gittens is rector and is very involved in the Challenge.

Rotary Club of Sunset sponsors the Challenge by supplying the participants with t-shirts each year.  Many thanks to them for their continual support of youth in our communities.
