Nassau, Bahamas - 2nd Annual Sir Durwood Knowles Fun Run & Walk this Saturday at 7am at the Nassau Yacht Club. The proceeds from the event will help fund the Bahamas National Sailing School's operating expenses and to assist with sending youth sailors to regattas to represent The Bahamas internationally.
There are 2 courses on Saturday, one approximately 1 1/2 miles, and one about 2 1/2 miles.
Pre-register at the Nassau Yacht Club or at any of the Sport Center locations. Registration will also be available from 6-7am prior to the event. Registration fee is $15. Come out and support our youth sailing program! (

The BNSS teaches sailing to children (and adults). It hosts a program for Government school children during the week, and several of the sailors are from the local children's homes. Sailing teaches children how to be independent thinkers, how to read the environment, make important tactical decisions and to rely on themselves. The club has children as young as 8 sailing boats independently in Montague Bay! The BSA/BNSS provides boats, sails, repairs, teaching and coaching for the children involved.
Their most experienced sailors compete internationally, representing the Bahamas all over the world, which is extremely expensive, as sailboats and coach boats need to be chartered at a cost of several hundred dollars for each event per child. Their international sailors also must purchase their own racing sails that need to be replaced very frequently and cost on average $500 dollars each as well. Sailing was the first sport to bring an Olympic Gold Medal to the Bahamas, and BSA/BNSS is working hard to give the children in their program a chance to once again bring the Bahamas into the international spotlight in sailing.
