A Scholarship for a Queen: (L-R) Ms Ramjattan, Marketing Manager at Terreve College; Lashanda Wildgoose, Miss Grand Bahama 2013; Ms Corneliour Moultrie, Miss Grand Bahama Organization; and Ms Abigail Bethel, Miss Grand Bahama Organization.

Freeport, Bahamas - Terreve College has for years been an extremely valuable sponsor to The Miss Grand Bahama Beauty Pageant Organization. Ms Ramjattan, Marketing Manager at Terreve, and Ms Moultrie, President of Alumni Association made it clear that first and foremost the importance of education. "There is nothing more beautiful, than a beautiful mind," Ms Ramjattan said.

"Pageantry is much more than what meets the eye, which of course is the physical beauty of the contestants." They are both well aware that beauty will get you only so far. "Knowledge is power an therefore key to any kind of success  in life," said Moultrie. They both stressed this matter and were extremely happy to offer Miss Grand Bahama 2013 Ms Lashanda Wildgoose a scholarship to Terreve College giving her the opportunity to expend her knowledge even more.

Terreve College was established in the City of Freeport, Grand Bahama in 1998, and offers anything from Associates, Bachelors and Master Degree, they also can assist in obtaining your High School Diploma, and have a variety of Certificate Courses available year-round. It is recognized by The Ministry of Public Service and The Ministry of Education in The Bahamas.

The following is an interview with Miss Grand Bahama 2013 Ms Lashanda Wildgoose, who is a tall and statuesque 24 year old. This interview was conducted right after she was awarded her scholarship to Terreve College at the YMCA in Freeport on January 24th 2014:

Lashanda, can you explain why you decided to enter The Miss Grand Bahama Beauty Pageant?

Well it actually wasn't something that I decided to do, I was asked to enter the pageant while working out at the YMCA.

What was the deciding factor to actually enter the contest?

I wanted to try something new and step out of the box a little bit.

Had you not been scouted, had it been something that you would consider doing?

Probably not lol.

Why not?!

It really just wasn't me, it wasn't something that I would do. I was more into my book work.

Is it what you expected? Did you have any expectations?

Not really, I mean i had a few preconceived notions from what I had seen on TV but you now you can't believe everything that you see on TV, but it  has been a good experience so far!

A Beautiful Mind: (L-R) Ms Corneliour Moultrie, Miss Grand Bahama Organization; Ms Lashanda Wildgoose, Miss Grand Bahama 2013; and Ms Lakshimi Ramjattan, Marketing Manager at Terreve College.

What do you think are the pro's and con's of pageantry?

Well pro's would be the self confidence building of the process. You will discover a whole new side of yourself, you discover your beautiful side and how to be confident, and how to carry yourself. It also gives you exposure. You get out much more and it opens a lot of doors for you, and of course you get to travel to different countries to represent your country.

As for con's I'd say that it is time-consuming and if you are dedicated you can get a tad bit overwhelmed, but if it's something that you really want, you stick to it and you get it done.

You recently represented The Bahamas in the Miss International Coffee 2014 in Columbia. How was that and did you have any expectations  that compared to your experience from your trip coming second place at the
Miss Global International Beauty Pageant in Jamaica?

It was a completely different pageant from the one in Jamaica, namely because it wasn't a Latin country, and the majority of the contestants spoke Spanish, in comparison to Jamaica were everybody spoke English, and going into the pageant in Columbia, were I didn't speak one word of Spanish, I figured it would have been a different experience, but I enjoyed myself and it was an awesome opportunity.

How would you say that this particular pageant has affected you?

I learned a few words of Spanish, I've come to appreciate knowing a different language when entering somebody else's country, because it makes things a whole lot more difficult. I appreciate the people whom I spent time with at the airport, because waiting in airports is not fun lol. I had the opportunity to meet some lovely girls, and so many different personalities. Travelling to Columbia was awesome. To visit and see that beautiful country, which is sooooo green, is something I will never forget. I was able to see the good and bad parts of the country.

Bad parts? Please elaborate if you can?

Well there is unrest among their countrymen and while we were on one parade in particular there was a little ruckus on the sidelines that became a bit uncomfortable, but we were very safe.  We each had our own police escort so it wasn't a completely unsafe situation, but it just goes to show how different other countries are, because you know we don't have any issues like that here in The Bahamas. It was a really good experience, and a real eye opener.

Do you believe that the next Miss Grand Bahama that will enter this contest should be able to speak Spanish?

Yes, I think they shoul,d because it puts you at a disadvantage. There is press at every event and the majority of the time the English speaking girls don't get to interact with the press, because they didn't speak Spanish, so they would automatically be overlooked.  It wasn't fair, but they literally could not speak to us.

The next contestant does not need to be fluent in Spanish, but she should be able to understand and communicate the basics. To be able to answer simple question like 'how are you', 'how are enjoying Columbia',  these are simple things that she should be able to respond to.

What would you say about The Miss Grand Bahama Pageant to the new hopeful girls entering for 2014?

That it's an opportunity to meet new people, especially meeting important people in your country. The training helps with self confidence, and a lot of the girls entering tend to be shy. This pageant will help open them up, because if you are a very shy person you have to put yourself out there more, you have to embrace your flaws, and work with what you have. I have scars and stretch marks and I had to embrace that, and do my best to love myself for who I am.

Be warned and prepared, because you are going to work hard as a Miss Grand Bahama contestant, and there will be many stressful moments, but don't let them overtake you. The rewards are worth the effort.

Do YOU have what it takes? The final screening for Miss Grand Bahama 2014 is on Wednesday, February 19th at the YMCA at 7pm.
