Nassau, Bahamas – Managing twenty-seven national parks, establishing new parks and educating Bahamians both young and not-so-young on the Bahamian environment is a big responsibility that comes with an expensive price tag.

The non-governmental organization responsible for this job is the Bahamas National Trust (BNT), and for the next three months they are encouraging BNT members nationally to help them recruit the public to join the BNT.

“Protecting the natural resources in our national parks is not cheap” commented Karen Panton, BNT Director of Finance.   “Fuel Costs for one month of patrols in the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park costs $11,000. Resource protection includes boat and vehicle maintenance, wardens’ salaries, insurance for park infrastructure, as well as the need to inform the public on the importance of these parks to our nation.”

As a result of the need to increase financial support for the national parks the BNT has launched an online membership promotion. Members who recruit one to five new BNT members will win a BNT promotional item, six to ten new members will receive a free one-year membership, and those who recruit more than 10 new BNT members will receive the promotional item, a one-year membership and be entered to win one of the two winning entry prizes for their island!

“By becoming a BNT member you get free admission to all 27 of our National Parks, discounts at select stores, discounts at BNT events and special invitations to members only functions,” said Katrina Cartwright, BNT Membership Officer. “However, the real benefit of membership is the voice you are lending to our fight to conserve and protect this beautiful country so that your children and grandchildren can enjoy and have access to the same resources that we benefit from today.”

The Trust has also teamed up with Micronet for the ‘Recruit and Win’ membership promotion, which runs to October 31st.  Micronet, a computer superstore located in Nassau, has graciously donated the grand prize of an iPad, which can be won if twenty or more new members are recruited.   Additionally, if you like the BNT and Micronet Facebook pages and share the membership promotion flyer, you can be entered to win an 8 GB iPod Touch. Other corporate sponsors are Luciano’s of Chicago, Fox Hill Nursery and UNEXSO in Grand Bahama.

”A strong membership is key to our fundraising efforts – it all adds up. The individual memberships may appear small when taken alone, but when added up, and considered together with corporate memberships, they can really translate into significant funding support for our programmes which is desperately needed,”  said Eric Carey, BNT Executive Director.

The BNT is asking for its members to get on board with the promotion and speak to their families and friends about joining the Trust. “If you are passionate about the Bahamian Environment and want your children and grandchildren to experience healthy coral reefs when they are snorkeling and to continue to be able to enjoy conch salad and grouper fingers then you will want to join and become a member of the BNT” said Nassau BNT Member Trevor Tucker, St. Augustine’s College Art Teacher.

The Bahamas National Trust was created by an Act of Parliament in 1959 to build and manage the national park system of the Bahamas. Possibly the only non-governmental organization in the world charged with such a responsibility, the TRUST, as it is commonly known works daily to conserve and protect the natural resources of The Bahamas, through stewardship and education for present and future generations. There are currently 27 National Parks managed by the TRUST with more than 2.2 million acres of marine and terrestrial areas protected.
