The Bahamas National Youth Council (BNYC) achieved a great milestone on November 25, 2012. We celebrated our fifth (5th) Anniversary as a premier youth organization in The Bahamas. An achievement like this has come with its ups and downs. Through it all, however, we have emerged stronger and more ready than ever for what is to come. The BNYC is positioned for more growth and further youth development with meaningful programmes and great collaboration.
We celebrated our fifth year with all the persons, organizations, and corporate sponsors and partners who have assisted us in realizing our goals. The National Art Gallery was abuzz with the melodious sounds of Giavanna Knowles, Julie (a Cuban music artist) and the Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band. It was a lively and exciting night of awards, well wishes, fine cuisine, and hearty Bahamian dancing. It was no secret; all who attended the event had a remarkable time as Tyson McKenzie, President stated, “The BNYC wishes to ensure that all young persons have the opportunity to network, meet persons of influence and further advance their cause and place within our society.” We greatly appreciated their support and look forward to working with them throughout the life of our organization.
The Director of Youth, Mr. Kyran Turnquest, brought remarks on behalf of the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Culture. He congratulated the BNYC on its work, and for accomplishing five years of youth advocacy. He stated the Ministry will endeavour to work with the BNYC in the near future.

The event was held for two major reasons. The first was to give back to the community through a donation to R.E.A.C.H., an organization geared towards the education and public awareness of autism. The other reason was to thank and award our many sponsors and supporters over the past five years. His Excellency, Ambassador Hu Shan of the Chinese Embassy stated that, "Young people represent the future and hope of a country. I wish you all grow into enormous assets to The Bahamas.” Giving further remarks about the evening’s event was Mr. John Armstrong, Deputy Chief of Mission for the United States Embassy. He stated that, “Every time that I interact with a BNYC member, I can sense his or her commitment to making sure that the views of young people are heard and recognized. BNYC members display an ardent passion for building a better Bahamas. With more than 60 percent of the world’s population under the age of 30, young people are not just the future, they are now.” The US Embassy received the BNYC’s Top Award, the Drexel W. Gomez Award, for being the BNYC’s Platinum Donor.

Tanya McCartney, Managing Director, RBC FINCO shared the following statement, “For over a century RBC and our employees have been an integral part of The Bahamas helping causes, supporting needs and giving back to the communities we serve. We are pleased to support the efforts of the Bahamas National Youth Council and congratulate them on their 5th anniversary as an umbrella organization for a wide cross section of youth organizations in The Bahamas."
Representing Scotiabank (Bahamas) Ltd., a corporate sponsor of the BNYC, was Ms. Leah Davis, Senior Manager for Marketing. She stated, “Scotia applauds The Bahamas National Youth Council and supports their efforts of promoting and uplifting young Bahamians.”
Also in attendance were the Hon. Fred Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Canon Harry Ward representing The Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands, students from C. R. Walker and R.M. Bailey Senior High Schools, St. John’s College, St. Anne’s School and other organizations including The Royal Bahamas Defense Force Cadets and The National Youth Policy Team of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.
