West End, Grand Bahama Island -
Old Bahama Bay was the location for an exciting Opti race organized by the GB Sailing Club.
Approximately 25 eager youth entered, with 13 boats participating in the race.
Determined to keep their boats upright, the Sailing club members had their hands full as
strong winds created challenges every step of the way.
The GB Sailing Club has been operational for one year and meets every other Sunday at the Sir Charles Hayward Yacht Club, Fortune Bay to teach the youth how to swim, sail and to learn boatmanship and sportsmanship.
Board members include: Sarah and Ricky Rolle, Derek Gape, Penny Roberts, Chris Paine, Chris Lowe and Joe Thompson. The Club is seeking to get disadvantaged youth from the Western and Eastern ends of the island involved in this sport.
The young members will be participating in the GB Regatta slated for June 19-22nd at Taino Beach.
In support of the GB Regatta, Old Bahama Bay and Ginn sur Mer made a sizeable donation of $10,000 for the Junior races.
The sponsorship will assist with the cost of t-shirts, trophies, meals for the junior sailors and organizers, boat owners for use of the āCā Class boats to be used in the event.
"We are proud to be a sponsor of the Junior event and seek to encourage our youth to get involved in the discipline of sailing and to be prepared to face the elements", says Derek Gape, Ginn sur Mer project manager.
Derek Gape, Board Member of the GB Sailing Club and Project Manager
