COVID-19 formerly known as the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Update #8 - Feb 19, 2020 - 11:30:27 AM

The Ministry of Health wishes to advise the public that to date, there remains no suspected or reported cases of COVID-19 in The Bahamas.  Currently, there are more than seventy thousand (70,000) cases reported in China, with at least one thousand eight hundred (1,800) deaths. The virus has spread to at least twenty-seven (27) countries.  

The public is further advised that all individuals who were being quarantined have been released after completing the required monitoring, and are exhibiting no symptoms of the virus...

PAHO prepares 8 Caribbean countries for laboratory diagnosis of new coronavirus - Feb 12, 2020 - 7:05:35 PM

Virology experts from the Pan American Health Organization have travelled to the Caribbean region to ensure that laboratory specialists are trained and equipped to identify and respond to potential imported cases of the new coronavirus (COVID-19).

Training in the Caribbean began in Suriname, followed by Barbados and Haiti, and will continue later this week in Jamaica, Belize and Dominica. Next week, PAHO experts will travel to Bahamas and Guyana to complete this initiative in the sub-region...

Cases of dengue in the Americas exceeded 3 million in 2019 - Feb 12, 2020 - 5:23:26 PM

The Americas reported more than 3 million cases of dengue in 2019, the largest number recorded in the Region so far, according to the latest epidemiological update from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

These figures exceeded the 2.4 million cases reported in 2015 during the previous largest dengue epidemic in the history of the Region. That year, almost 1400 people died of dengue...

Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) update #6 - Feb 7, 2020 - 11:30:42 AM

The Ministry of Health wishes to advise the public that there remains no suspected, reported or confirmed cases of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in The Bahamas.  Currently, the 2019-nCoV has spread to at least twenty-seven (27) countries, and now has more than twenty eight thousand (28,000) cases confirmed on Mainland China, with five hundred sixty-five (565) deaths. 

To date, fifteen (15) residents have been quarantined. The individuals monitored currently have not experienced symptoms of the virus...

On 31 December 2019, Wuhan Municipality in Hubei Province, China reported a cluster of pneumonia cases with unknown etiology. By the 9th of January 2020, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention identified a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as the causative agent of this outbreak. On 30 January 2020, with more than 9,700 confirmed cases in China and 106 confirmed cases in 19 other countries...

The World Health Organization (WHO) today spells out the need to step up cancer services in low and middle-income countries. WHO warns that, if current trends continue, the world will see a 60% increase in cancer cases over the next two decades. The greatest increase (an estimated 81%) in new cases will occur in low- and middle-income countries, where survival rates are currently lowest.

This is largely because these countries have focused limited health resources on combating infectious diseases and improving maternal and child health, while health systems do not have the capacity to adequately prevent, screen, diagnose and treat people with cancer...

PAHO issues epidemiological alert on Novel Coronavirus for the Americas - Jan 17, 2020 - 4:40:41 PM

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has issued an alert to its member countries on the Novel Coronavirus (nCoV), recommending that “health care workers have access to up to date information on the illness, be familiar with the principles and procedures for handling nCoV infections, and be trained to inquire about a patient’s travel history in order to connect this information with clinical data.”

Although over 40 cases have been reported in China, Thailand and Japan, there is “no evidence to suggest that person-to-person transmission occurs easily,” the alert said...
