Top Stories of the Year
Top Stories of 2014 from TheBahamasWeekly.com - Jan 5, 2015 - 2:43:15 PM
The Bahamas Weekly is pleased to present an Overview and Year in Review of our Top Stories of 2014!
Predominantly, 2014 was impacted by the power of social media... much of what we read was channeled and viewed there first. Due to its instant nature much news was generated through this medium, and most notably through Facebook.
In 2014 we prepared for VAT, passed the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities) Bill, passed the Gaming Bill, tabled the Petroleum Act, implemented a new Immigration Policy, worried about Ebola, and the Marriott franchised Atlantis. The Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival was announced and launched...

BNT Encouraged by Bahamian Rock Iguanas Release - Sep 25, 2014 - 11:17:15 PM
Now that the recently poached
Bahamian rock iguanas are not only back in The Bahamas, but also back in
the wild, the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) is reminding Bahamians to be
extremely cautious when it comes to interaction with our rare Bahamian
wildlife.
“The BNT is extremely pleased that
these rescued endangered iguanas have found a home in the Moriah
Harbour Cay National Park in Exuma,” said Eric Carey, BNT Executive
Director. “It is our hope that these iguanas will be part of the
establishment of another population of this critically endangered
subspecies. The fact that they are now protected within a national park
gives them a much better chance of long-term survival.”

Nassau, Bahamas – Bahamas National Trust
park wardens joined an international research team recently to learn

The purpose of the trip was to

information and to insert identification tags into the skin of the ones
that weren't already being studied. The research project took body
measurements and blood samples from the iguanas, identified and recorded
the sex of the iguanas, removed ticks and recorded and other injuries,
and if the iguana had been captured before, compared the current health
