The Bahamas Weekly is pleased to present an Overview and Year in Review of our  Top Stories of 2014!

Predominantly, 2014 was impacted by the power of social media... much of what we read was channeled and viewed there first. Due to its instant nature much news was generated through this medium, and most notably through Facebook.

In 2014 we prepared for VAT, passed the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities) Bill, passed the Gaming Bill, tabled the Petroleum Act, implemented a new Immigration Policy, worried about Ebola, and the Marriott franchised Atlantis. The Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival was announced and launched...

Now that the recently poached Bahamian rock iguanas are not only back in The Bahamas, but also back in the wild, the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) is reminding Bahamians to be extremely cautious when it comes to interaction with our rare Bahamian wildlife.

“The BNT is extremely pleased that these rescued endangered iguanas have found a home in the Moriah Harbour Cay National Park in Exuma,” said Eric Carey, BNT Executive Director. “It is our hope that these iguanas will be part of the establishment of another population of this critically endangered subspecies. The fact that they are now protected within a national park gives them a much better chance of long-term survival.”

The women -Angla-Alina Bita, and Vitora-Oliva Bucsa, from Romania were later jailed for the crime.

Nassau, Bahamas - On Wednesday,  July 9th, The Bahamas successfully  repatriated 12 Rock Iguanas that were taken from the country back in February of this year. The animals were transported back to New Providence with the aid of the UK Border Force and British Airways. After arriving in New Providence, the Iguanas were then transported to the Gerace Research Centre in San Salvador.

Upon arrival, the animals were removed from the packing material and assessed to be in good condition. The animals were regularly monitored. On the morning of the July 10th, the animals were observed and found to be in good condition. Unfortunately, on the evening of July 10th three of the iguanas appeared to be unresponsive. Despite best efforts, three of the iguanas died. The remaining nine animals are readjusting well.

British Airways brings smuggled iguanas home - Jul 11, 2014 - 11:34:04 AM

Nassau, The Bahamas -- Twelve Rock Iguanas, stolen from San Salvador and Exuma in February and smuggled into the United Kingdom were returned to the Bahamas via British Airways on July 9 escorted by UK Border Force officers, Ann Ainslie and Tim Luffman. It was reported that 13 of the endemic animals were originally captured, with one dying while en route to the UK.

"Wildlife crime is a global problem, which we can only address successfully through our collective efforts and greater cooperation," said Minister of the Environment and Housing, Kenred Dorsett, at the Lynden Pindling International Airport.

He said this crime plagues animals and plants and in the Bahamian context, adversely affects Bahamian Iguanas.

London, England - A collaborative effort between The Bahamas government, UK Border Force and British Airways led to The Bahamas’ 12 San Salvador Rock Iguanas being returned home on July 9th, 2014 at The Lynden Pindling International Airport. The rare Iguanas, part of an endangered species which comes under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), will travel onto San Salvador on Thursday where only a few hundred remain.

On February 3rd, the Iguanas were found by UK Border Force officers on at London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5; two women were charged in connection with the matter.

The Bahamas government and UK officials see the repatriation as a huge success as these critically endangered animals will now be returned to their indigenous habitat.

small-206-Iguanas-Tagged-on-Various-Cays-During-Research-Trip.jpg
Nassau, Bahamas – Bahamas National Trust park wardens joined an international research team recently to learn more about the rare and endangered Bahamian Rock Iguana. BNT park wardens Shenica Campbell, the new park warden in Nassau and Ellsworth Weir, Grand Bahama Deputy Park Warden, participated in the research expedition organised by the Shedd Aquarium for a week-long research expedition in the Exuma Cays.

The purpose of the trip was to assess the health of the iguana populations on the cays, to record information and to insert identification tags into the skin of the ones that weren't already being studied. The research project took body measurements and blood samples from the iguanas, identified and recorded the sex of the iguanas, removed ticks and recorded and other injuries, and if the iguana had been captured before, compared the current health of the iguana to the information previously recorded...
