The Bahamas Weekly is pleased to present an Overview and Year in Review of our
Top Stories of 2014!
We also present a year in photos.
Predominantly, 2014 was impacted by the power of social media... much of what we read was channeled and viewed there first. Due to its instant nature much news was generated through this medium, and most notably through Facebook.
In 2014 we prepared for VAT, passed the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities) Bill, passed the Gaming Bill, tabled the Petroleum Act, implemented a new Immigration Policy, worried about Ebola, and the Marriott franchised Atlantis. The Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival was announced and launched. It was the year Canine Distemper hit Nassau and Bahamian Rock Iguanas were smuggled out of the country. Many got involved across the archipelago with the 242 Colour Runs, we beat a world record for most conch shells blown at one time; and we took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!
While we called for Freedom of Information, there was the NSA spying story and we wondered if our cell phone were being tapped. FATCA came into effect and there was the Bank of the Bahamas bailout.
The Bahamas Weekly's biggest 'news day' and 'news week' in our eight year history fell on and after the November 9th plane crash in Grand Bahama Island that took the lives of 9 people including Dr. Myles Munroe.
Some of 2014's highlights in film, arts and entertainment
