FREEPORT, Grand Bahama Island – A few short weeks after the nation
celebrated 43 years of Independence, a strong feeling of pride took over
the island of Grand Bahama as Jonquel Jones and Chavano “Buddy” Hield
returned home.
Coming back home for the first time since both
being selected as the 6th pick at the NBA and WNBA 2016 drafts,
respectively, Hield, an Eight Mile Rock boy and Jones, a Holmes Rock
girl had a lot to celebrate...

on Thursday night with hundreds of persons both foreign and locals

NASSAU, The Bahamas - Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Rt.
Hon. Perry Christie said that it was always a "special pleasure" for him
to participate in any ceremony that lifts up the names of people who
have impacted The Bahamas in "very special ways".
"The word 'legend', in itself, speaks to the fact that history will
accord each of you a very special place in the annals of sporting
history in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas," Prime Minister Christie
said at the 43rd Independence Celebrations Ceremony Honouring Athletic

Jonquel Jones Celebrated in Grand Bahama -

WNBA Connecticut Suns' superstar, Jonquel Jones was welcomed home like a
hero on Saturday, July 23rd to the city of Freeport in Grand Bahama. Jones is the third Bahamian woman to earn a D-I hoops scholarship in the U.S. and plays for the Connecticut Sun.

friends, family and Hoytes youth basketball teams along with Coach

Buddy Hield welcomed home by Jonquel Jones and Grand Bahama community -

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama -- On Sunday, July 24th, NBA player Buddy Hield
was welcomed home to Grand Bahama Island by WNBA player Jonquel Jones
who had arrived the day prior. Both
were welcomed home by family and friends in grand style.
The two were recently honoured as Sports Legends
in special ceremonies that applauded 38 Bahamian sporting stars at the
Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau on Thursday, July 21,
2016.
From those ceremonies and activities, they traveled home to Grand
Bahama...

Unemployment down by 2%
On Friday, the Department of Statistics released its latest bi-annual
Labour Force and Household Income Survey which was conducted during the
period of April 25 – May 1, 2016. Unemployment fell by 2%, from 14.8% to
12.7%
The results of the survey indicate that since November 2015 the labour
force grew by 1.7% and now totals 215,880 persons. The department
explained the breakdown as follows:
“Since November 2015, there was an increase (7,540) in the number of
employed persons and a decrease (3,855) in the number of unemployed
persons resulting in an improvement in the unemployment rate which
declined from 14.8% to 12.7%...

PM CHRISTIE ATTENDS CARIBBEAN ENERGY SECURITY SUMMIT
Prime
Minister Christie traveled to Washington DC on Tuesday of this week
where he joined other CARICOM Heads at the Caribbean Energy Security
Summit. CARICOM leaders met with United States Vice President Joseph
Biden where they again shared their expectations on funding and
technical cooperation as the region formulates its strategic plan to
arrest global warming.
