designer living in Eleuthera is calling for Bahamian jewellery, handbag,
hat and footwear artists to collaborate with her to provide a "complete

Gardiner, better known as Empress Verda, has been sewing for nearly 30
years. She loves using Bahamian colours and African fabrics but in
recent years, she began looking for an authentically Bahamian fabric

While we may not be able to solve the amount of waste coffee pods
have created for our planet, there's one person doing her part to
reduce, and that's Natalia Rodrigo, Chief Upcycler/ Designer at Beads 'n Pods.
Rodrigo's
designs were one of the big surprises at Eco Fashion Week Australia's
second edition. She creates earrings, necklaces, anklets, belts,
brooches and headpieces – none of which look as if they are made from a
waste product made from aluminum or plastic that take hundreds of years
to break down in the soil.
It all started when her neighbour handed her some cleaned, coffee pods she had used...

55 local and international designers took part, making it the the
largest eco fashion week in the world. With the support of 72 fashion
models, 125 hair and makeup stylists, 150 volunteers and 500 meals, the
team have definitely become a tight-knit family with many of the models'
mothers helping backstage to ensure the team was being supported.

From a remote cattle station in the middle of the outback of Central Australia comes a unique and eco-friendly jewelry line from Curtin Springs Paper. On the 1,028,947 acre Curtin Springs Station which is also a tourist destination, the company uses native grasses to create handmade paper, which in turn has been used to create jewelry.
Curtin Springs is a shining example of eco tourism with the cattle
station offering lodging, walks in nature, and tours featuring their

Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA) is underway in the Land Down Under with the first week held in Port Douglas, Queensland. An earlier call for
designers to create one unique look using men’s shirts in the Upcycling
Challenge created by Marilyn R. Wilson of Canada was again well received
and on the opening night of EFWA2018 at the Port Douglas Community
Hall, we were treated to the outcome of the challenge. 13 international
and Australian designers showcased.
A dress made from used police shirts (above) was a show standout,
as was another dress made from sewn together long strips of fabric.

The Bahamas Weekly was one of the first publications to write about Caribbean model, Brittany Noon when her career launched
at the age of 16. After that 2014 runway event in Paris, thanks to
Saint Lucian-Parisian fashion celebrity Vincent McDoom, Noon's career
has skyrocketed putting her on the runway for the world's leading
designers.
Fast forward to May 2018, when Noon was struck by a car while
riding her bike and the consequence was a broken pelvis and sacrum.
Despite this devastating circumstance, and the inability to walk, Noon
set a course to recovery.

“If you prepare wool cloth and compress it while also heating it, a part
of the cloth becomes resin,” explains Tanaka. “This is because keratin
contained in the wool becomes resin.”
His new work is called,
‘The Claws of Clothes,’ and it will unveil the result of his
collaboration with Professor Hirai's laboratory developing a textile
utilizing the ‘wool resin.’
Tanaka said his inspiration came from the human nail, which he says is composed of the same keratin as wool resin...

Week Australia (EFWA) is now accepting submissions from designers around
the world to create one unique look using men’s shirts for the return
of the Upcycling Challenge by Marilyn R. Wilson. Accepted submissions
will be featured on the runway at the second annual event in November,
in two states: Nov. 4 – 10 in Port Douglas, Queensland; and Nov. 15 – 21
in Perth, Western Australia.
The Upcycling Challenge provides an
opportunity for sustainable designers to gain international attention,
and to encourage designers who are currently not using sustainable
practices to give it a try. The Challenge also promotes EFWA’s mandate
to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle garments rather than have them sent to a
landfill. Note – this challenge is only open to ‘new submissions,’ and
former participants are excluded...
