Degas_MKT_38-S.jpg
Impressionist painter Edgar Degas is well known for his late 19th century paintings of Parisian dancers and racehorses. What he is perhaps less known for is his fascination with the quotidian details of modern life in the French capital, including high fashion hats and the women who crafted them.

Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade, currently on show at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, explores this infatuation which inspired a visually compelling body of work that subtly documents the effect that hat-making had on turn of the century Parisians, from working women to high society men and everyone in between...

Make Do and Mend - Fashion Flashback - Jul 7, 2017 - 6:11:23 AM

Back_in_the_Day_2-S.jpg
Eco fashion takes me back to my childhood and wartime/postwar time in the UK. Dresses were taken apart and re-sewn with a bit of extra fabric creatively added, or they were made into rag rugs. Hand knitted sweaters were carefully picked undone, the yarn washed and reused for something different. There was a “rag and bone” man who took his horse drawn cart through the neighbourhoods once a month to pick up discarded items and recycle them.

“Recycling” was the way of life at that time out of necessity. But it wasn’t called recycling. Everything was cherished and re-used or repaired. There were no new items available. Brown paper bags were taken back to stores for reuse, milk bottles and pop bottles were all picked up by the delivery guy, and taken back to the dairy or pop company to be washed and reused...

Fashion gets ethical Down Under...

The question, “What are you wearing?” is taking on a new meaning as we become more cognizant of fabrics, how our clothing was made, and where our clothing ends up after we’ve worn it - most often, only once. With fashion as the world’s largest polluter, not to mention one of the least ethical trades, each of us should start thinking about what’s in our closet, and how we can reduce and reuse.

Designers who have a passion for creating a world where garments have a clean and positive story to tell are set to converge Down Under from November 23 - 27, 2017 for the inaugural Eco Fashion Week Australia (EFWA)...
