Dozens of businesses granted duty waivers for apparel imports - Nov 11, 2018 - 10:30:53 PM

The Ministry of Finance is inviting retail shoe and clothing merchants to take advantage of the customs duty waiver that is available to businesses to reduce the cost of importing goods. Since the policy was announced in July, with the start of the 2018/2019 budget year, the Ministry of Finance granted waivers to 154 applicants.

There are many more eligible businesses that can apply for the waiver, and the Ministry of Finance wants to encourage them to utilize this tax relief measure to reduce the cost of doing business and to bring down the price for retail shopping at home...

Peter Turnquest, led a delegation to Brussels and Paris this week, for frank discussions with high ranking officials within the European Commissionand the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on The Bahamas’ compliance with international standards on tax governance.

Former Cabinet Minister and Parliamentarian, Mr. Bradley Bernard Emmanuel Roberts was laid to rest in an Official Ceremony on Friday, November 9, 2018 at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, West Street.  Paying respects were family members, friends, colleagues, former constituents and government officials.

PHA/GBHS Update on services following chemical spill at the Rand Memorial Hospital - Nov 9, 2018 - 11:31:07 PM

Laboratory services at the Rand Memorial Hospital have been suspended this weekend as the hospital’s management and technical teams continue to monitor the aftermath of a chemical spill which occurred in the Laboratory on Thursday morning. Management however has confirmed the full restoration of radiology services, and the cessation of referrals from General Practice to the Freeport Community Clinic. 

Immediately following the spill, environmental chemistry experts, an independent Hazmat company, a private chemist and the Department of Environmental Health Services were called in to mitigate the effects and clean the affected area.

Kwasi Thompson told participants at the recent first Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference, in Freeport.

“Over the past year significant progress has been made in our tech hub initiative. The Tech Hub Committee has unveiled their strategic plan that will help us to chart the way forward. I am convinced that we can help to make technology become a third pillar of this island’s economy, standing alongside Industry and tourism.”

The Bahamian economy is turning around economically, said Prime Minister Dr. the Most Hon. Hubert A. Minnis as he officially opened the Securities Commission of The Bahamas Public Companies Forum.

The one-day dialogue was held under the theme: “Expanding the Role of the Capital Markets In Bahamian Economic Development,” on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at British Colonial Hilton.

After not being held for three years, a Bahamian Art and Craft Show will be held on Saturday, November 24 from 9 am to 8 pm.

‘Authenticity,’ as it is commonly known, was announced by Executive Chairman of BAIC, Michael Foulkes during a press conference on Thursday, November 8. The event is being held in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism.

Held under the theme, “Bahamian Tings,” the exhibit will be at BAIC grounds on Alcester Road and East Sunrise Highway...

Prime Minister Confirms Government Seeks to Lower Cost of Electricity - Nov 8, 2018 - 5:39:53 PM

Prime Minster Dr. the Most Hon. Hubert A. Minnis is making good on his promise to reduce the cost of electricity to those most vulnerable in the community.

In a statement delivered in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 the Prime Minister addressed the temporary spike in the fuel surcharge component of consumers’ electricity bills.

In this vein, he advised The House of Assembly that the Government will be moving an amendment to the law to allow for a temporary increase in the VAT exempt ceiling from $200 a month up to $300 per month...

Chemical Spill In The Rand Memorial Hospital Laboratory Under Control - Nov 8, 2018 - 3:45:41 PM

Laboratory and Radiology services temporarily suspended today at the Michaela Virgill Storr Pavilion of the Rand Memorial Hospital following a minor chemical spill in the Laboratory this morning. No injuries were reported, however cautionary measures were taken for employees affected to be seen by doctors on staff. At no time did the incident impact patients admitted on the hospital’s wards, as teams worked quickly to contain the spill...
