Sitting with Basheva Eve, the designer behind the Bahamian fashion Label, La Bonne Vie Bahamas, on the beautiful grounds of The British Colonial Hilton, in Nassau Bahamas, you can’t help but grow to like the woman who reveals to me she’s shed 60lbs in the space of a year. She explains that she wanted to look “fabulous for Fashion Week”. Basheva Eve is one of Grand Bahamas' best kept secrets. She designs for men and women- clothing that is specifically requested for red carpet events such as galas, balls and also business functions. Over the years she has garnered a devoted following that includes clients such as Willie Moss, Gladys Munksnaes, the Miss Bahamas pageantry and many other prominent members of the Bahamian elite.

Showing for the first time at The Islands of the World Fashion Week held in Nassau Bahamas, November 5th-8th, 2008, Basheva Eve & her marketing executive and business partner Rolanda Espstien spoke frankly and enthusiastically about what this whole experience had been like for La Bonne Vie Bahamas.

After watching and photographing her show for The Bahamas Weekly I sat with the women and got a feel for what ‘La Bonne Vie Bahamas’ is really all about.

“We decided to show a Resort Collection for a woman who has a lot of confidence. A woman who’s sexy and appealing and knows what she wants. She’s of all ages and has a body and wants to show it off”.

Her clothing allows you to go from a relaxing day with friends, having lunch or sipping margaritas by the pool, to a business function. Focusing on using radiant colors inspired from her home (The Bahamas), she shares white from the sandy white beaches, turquoise from the beautiful waters, the colour of mango, the colour of ackee fruit as well as shades of cinnamon. Whilst referencing the past, that old retro feel, she uses cottons, silks and linens - fabrics that have texture and create a luxurious sheen.

Rolanda Epstein, marketing manager for Basheva Eve, adds with a giggle that La Bonne Vie Bahamas has come a long way. “It has evolved, shall we say, from the birth of the label when all the designs only came in the white!”

Presenting a collection that is light, airy and elegant. That is intrinsically Basheva Eve, it was hard to miss the sounds of delight made by the audience and the several rounds of applause when models strutted down the runway. The coveted front row seats for Basheva Eve’s show read like a who’s who of the ‘Bahamian Best Dressed List’. The stylish Lady Pindling, invited personally by Basheva; the noted artist, Chantal Bethel; and known women from Grand Bahama, Laurie Tuchel; of Freeport Film Society; and Gladys Munksnaes, owner of Elite Loft.

It speaks for itself that Basheva has clients that range in age from 20 to 60 years old.   She has a personal approach when designing for clients, letting them know that every piece is tailored for them, requiring numerous fittings and a one on one selection of fabrics, “My clients are aware that when I design, I do with all of this in mind. La Bonne Vie Bahamas clothing makes you feel good about your inner and outer self.”

La Bonne Vie Bahamas also includes menswear that evolved from designing for female clients who have men in their lives that need or require an outfit to compliment the designs created for them. “Somehow men have been forgotten in the area of Bahamian fashion design. I try and cater for the man who wants to be comfortable and look good in and out of the home.”

When asked about Islands of the World Fashion Week, there’s a sparkle in her eyes, “It’s been an exciting experience for me as this is my first fashion week and although I’ve had small shows in my hometown of Freeport, this has been by far my biggest audience to date. It is a mixture of the anticipation of viewing other designers and gaining a wider audience for my clothing.”

It’s plain to see this will be the beginning of many more shows for Basheva Eve throughout the region.
