With half of the top 10 grossing films of 2018 based on comic books – an industry estimated to be around $865 million in the United States, according to market research group IbisWorld – a local illustrator and animator has called for increased government support.
 
“[We need] more patrons of the arts. There are some here and there are some real strong patrons in Nassau especially, but I think if government supported it more it would go really far,” said Lamaro Smith, creative director and founder of Motionsmith Studios, a boutique graphic design agency specializing in storyboards and animated commercials...

Grand Bahama primary school students got a opportunity to form choirs and showcase Bahamian music, costumes, and dances, during the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival Grand Bahama adjudications, on March 29, 2019, at Grand Lucayan Convention Centre.  Among the performances were renditions of songs by Eddie Minnis, Tyrone "Dr. Offff" Fitzgerald, and Audrey Dean Wright; as well as classics, such as "Bellamina" and "Watermelon Spoilin'".  More than 500 entries are expected to take part in the Festival in dance, drama, the visual arts, and music, until April 5...

The NAGB team is taking the Inter-Island Travelling Exhibition to Grand Bahama for the second time this April! We were last in Grand Bahama in 2016 with “Max/Amos”, which was showcased at the Charles Hayward Library; now the NAGB's travelling exhibition programme is taking "Trans: A Migration of Identity” to our second city, where it will be on display at the Rand Nature Centre from April 5th- 26th, 2019.

If you’re already in Grand Bahama or travelling there, join us at the opening reception for this very relevant exhibition at the Rand Nature Centre on Friday, April 5th at 6:30 p.m.

Dancers in Grand Bahama took to the stage, at the start of the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival dance adjudications on the island March 27, 2019.  Students presented performances in modern, jazz, popular and international folk dances, to cheers and applause of the audience at Grand Lucayan Convention Centre -- adjudicated by Cultural Icon Lawrence Carroll.

Walter Parker Primary School students formed two groups, while Hugh Campbell Primary School students formed three groups, as they competed in the Junkanoo Best Combo primary class, during the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival adjudications, at the Grand Lucayan Resort Convention Centre lawn area, in Freeport, on March 25, 2019.  The Adjudications take place until April 5 at the Convention Centre, free and open to the public.

The East End Boys of East End Junior High School, joined the Junkanoo Five-Man Combo from The Beacon School, and two groups of the Tabernacle Baptist Academy Falcons, in the Junkanoo Best Combo junior high class, during the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival adjudications, at the Grand Lucayan Resort Convention Centre lawn area, in Freeport, on March 25, 2019.  Adjudications take place until April 5 at the Convention Centre.

Clement Bethel National Arts Festival Drama adjudications, at Grand Lucayan Resort Convention Centre, in Freeport, on March 26, 2019.  The Adjudications, free and open to the public, will take place until April 5 at the Convention Centre.

Author, Rudy Sawyer made a courtesy call on the Minister of State for Grand Bahama, Senator Kwasi Thompson on Monday, March 25, 2019, where he presented the Minister with a copy of his new book, 'Grand Bahama Treasure & Tour Guide: Settlements and Freeport.'  The book is a comprehensive fact-based compilation of information about the entire island of Grand Bahama, including every settlement and community from East Grand Bahama to West Grand Bahama.  Sawyer said that the book took him several years to write and produce, because of the amount of research involved in gathering the facts about the island...

Primary and high school student dancers showcased their dance moves on the stage at the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts, during the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival New Providence adjudications, on March 14, 2019.  The New Providence adjudications enters its second week and over 1100 entrants in New Providence are expected to take part in dance, drama, voice, playing musical instruments and the arts and craft through to March 21.  The Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts is the venue for dance, musical instruments and drama, while the Holy Trinity Church Activities Centre, in Stapledon Gardens, is the venue for vocal performances.  All events are free and open to the public...

An amazing 5 days of some of the best jazz music anywhere! From April 10th–14th, 2019 on the beautiful family island of Eleuthera in The Bahamas, a mix of local Bahamian and international musicians will come together and perform music at venues around the island, usually with the turquoise sea and white sand as a back drop.

The Festival aids The Haynes Library and scholarship fund in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera. There is a strong educational element for the children of Eleuthera, many of whom have little or no music in the school curriculum...

Eleven school bands from five islands recently participated in the third annual high school pop band competition The Music Project (TMP), with Queen’s College taking home the top prize. All band members of QC’s “Thrive 2 XL” pop band will receive an all-expense paid trip to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts this summer to become engrossed in a training camp that will hone their skills and boost their confidence even more. This is the second year that QC has won the top prize. Mentor Dion Turnquest guided the kids through their three performances. Each band had to perform a cover song, a Bahamian song and an original song written and composed by the students themselves...

This year’s inspiration was Vincent van Gogh and his creations under the sun in landscapes especially in southern France. It is easy to compare the light on Grand Bahama Island with the light in Provence...

Dr. Hubert Minnis.  Princess Michael of Kent in her autobiography, "A Cheetah's Tale," tells of growing up in Mozambique, raising a cheetah called Tess, and the incredible bond that can exist between humans and animals...
