A new opportunity to celebrate Junkanoo, appreciate it as an art form, and enjoy another festive cultural event will birth this February when the Bahamas Junkanoo Art & Music Festival is launched. Expect elaborate displays of visual art both created and inspired by Junkanoo artists when doors open on Saturday and Sunday, February 23 and 24 from 11am to 8pm under the theme: “We Live in Color”. “My name is Christopher Outten and I am a Bahamian, born in the city of Nassau, The Bahamas. I’m a practicing artist who recently completed an Associates of Fine Arts at The University of The Bahamas. I have been exhibiting publicly since 2013, and my main emphasis is on Painting and Hand Building, but I’m open to experimenting with new media and concepts.

A 12 year-old Bahamian students has become the youngest artist and the first Bahamian to participate in the RAW project which coincides with Art Basel in Miami, Florida Every year.

Sean Austin was proud of his painting of Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis shaking cowbells and rushing in a Junkanoo parade. His teacher, Cicely Bodie, was proud of him too, and created opportunities for him to show off his work of art, including meeting the Prime Minister himself. Last summer, Ms. Bodie took Sean to the the launch of the Craftsman’s Business Center...

Plastered in Pretty by N.C. Marks is a new pop culture novel published here by House of Nehesi Publishers (HNP).

Marks, from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has written a “ferocious depiction” of a world dominated by social media appearances, said Gerty Dambury, a Prix Carbet author based in France.

Plastered in Pretty is “a dystopian tale set in a Caribbean paradise. Facebook and Instagram are virtual religious icons. A pyromaniac burns a new-born in the late night, and civil servants chat only via WhatsApp,” said HNP president Jacqueline Sample...

The Black Prince of Grant’s Town is a biography / memoir of Johnson’s father, Basil L. I. Johnson, C.B.E., D.F.M (1920 – 2004). Basil Johnsons’ life is a walk through our nation’s history spanning 80 plus years of significant change.  The book provides invaluable insight into important events such as unionism and the 1958 General Strike, the Bahamas’ involvement in World War II, The Electricity Department and the treatment of World War II veterans by the Government of the Day.

Five artists from Grand Bahama—Chantal Bethel, Claudette Dean, Laurie Tuchel, Del Foxton, and Paula Boyd Farrington—will be featured in a group art exhibit titled YIN at Hillside House Gallery in Nassau, 9 November–30 November 2018.

Their work centers on the theme “Yin" (as in Yin & Yang), each a half of the harmony of the Universe, with works honoring the energy of the Divine Feminine.

Art works include homages to the empowerment of women as vessels of love, healing, and transformation, contemplations on reverence and wonder for Mother Nature and the feminine role as guardian of the sacred
