The Leader of The Opposition, Philip Brave Davis Renewal: A Call to Action - Jul 24, 2019 - 2:25:59 PM
On the eve of the Progressive Liberal Party’s 54th convention, I would like to share a few thoughts.
The
theme of our convention is Renewal: A Call to Action. We have
approached our work of reinvigorating the Progressive Liberal Party with
a sense of urgency, because The Bahamas needs a strong, inclusive,
forward-looking party that stands up for the people...

DNA Leader on resignation of T. Brent Symonette - Jul 16, 2019 - 4:36:27 PM
Today, for and on behalf of the Bahamian people, the DNA launches its 10
days of Activism demanding transparent, accountable and anti-corrupt
governance.
We have assembled here today before this landmark
building, the Town Centre Mall, a symbolic landmark of corruption,
cronyism, nepotism and conflicts of interest.
Bahamians, we have
stepped to an all-time low. Our Government has no shame. Our leaders
have no shame...

DNA Deputy: Political favors costing taxpayers under PLP and FNM - Jul 4, 2019 - 3:30:42 PM
The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) continues to observe Prime
Minister Minnis and his band of merry men as they inflict suffering on
the Bahamian people. This has been evident from the passage of the
Commercial Enterprise Act spearheaded by former Minister Brent
Symonette, to presiding over the multiple blacklisting of our financial
services industry, rise in unemployment and poor labor relations, to
increasing VAT to 12% when Bahamians can't pay their bills or find good
paying jobs to have a decent standard of living...

DNA Chairman: We are in a national crisis - Jul 3, 2019 - 5:15:08 PM
Bahamians are in a state of hopelessness, frustration and annoyance by
the recent blackouts that have become a part of everyday life in our
country. The load shedding exercise being carried out by BPL is evidence
that successive Free National Movement (FNM) and Progressive Liberal
Party (PLP) administrations including the current Minnis-led
administration lack a viable plan for reliable and sustainable energy.
Meanwhile, while the people sweat, PM Minnis and his entourage are in
comfortable and air conditioned accommodation at a resort in St. Lucia...

DNA: Debate is about economic empowerment and equal opportunity - Jul 2, 2019 - 12:00:43 PM
The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) has reviewed comments attributed
to the Hon. Brent Symonette regarding his unceremonious resignation from
the Cabinet of The Bahamas.
The DNA condemns any and all
attempts to further divide Bahamians along racial lines in an
environment polarized by political tribalism as created by the Free
National Movement (FNM) and the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP). The DNA
is the unifying force for Bahamians of all races, gender...

DNA Leader responds to resignation of T. Brent Symonette - Jun 30, 2019 - 9:21:33 PM
The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) is in possession of an official
communication from the Cabinet Office announcing the resignation of the
Hon. T. Brent Symonette as Minister of Financial Services, Trade and
Industry and Immigration effective July 1, 2019. According to the
Cabinet Office, the Hon. Elsworth Johnson will assume the same portfolio
effective July 1, 2019.
The Government of The Bahamas provided
no explanation or reasons for the abrupt and unceremonious resignation
of this high-ranking Cabinet Minister who had been described as the
Super Minister due to his multiple portfolios and responsibilities...

Davis remarks at the farewell ceremony for Governor General The Most Hon. Dame Marguerite Pindling - Jun 27, 2019 - 8:10:38 PM
I fully adopt the established protocol.
If I had to recognize all
of the dignitaries in attendance, I would most certainly use up most of
if not all of my allotted time.
I, like many of you here today,
have known Dame Marguerite for many years. As a public figure – being
the country’s first lady for one quarter of a century - many Bahamians
became aware of the Dame through her public image as she served as
patron and fundraiser for local charitable organizations

Senator Fred Mitchell on The Guyabera in Summer Time - Jun 27, 2019 - 11:30:12 AM
Senator Fred Mitchell speaking on the wrap up of the debate on
the 2019 Budget in the Senate has proposed to the Government that the
PLP would support a rules change in the Senate which allow men to dress
in for the sessions of the Senate during the summer time.
Senator
Mitchell recalled that there was such a rule in the public service
which has fallen into disuse and said that the rule should be returned,
given that The Bahamas is a hot country...

Madame President, with your leave I would like to thank firstly the heavenly father for blessing me this opportunity.
In
addition, Madame President, I wish to join my colleagues on this side
and use this time to thank the leader of Opposition and the incoming
next Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas the Hon. Philip
Brave Davis for bestowing upon me his trust, and confidence to represent
in this senate for Women, Millenials and Bahamians from all walks of
life. Our Leader is a man that understands, and believes in the
philosophy of the PLP, and respects the policy of Bahamianization. Our
leader understands and connects with the story of the small man...

in this Honourable House on behalf of the great and resilient people of

DNA on Immigration Policy - Jun 15, 2019 - 6:00:39 PM
The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) notes comments attributed to our
former leader, Mr. Branville McCartney reported in the Tribune Newspaper
(14th June 2019). As a former politician and private citizen, Mr.
McCartney is entitled to his personal opinions and lends his voice to
national issues from time to time. Additionally, as a former Cabinet
Minister with responsibility for Immigration, Mr. McCartney also has
some insights on this subject matter.
While it is apparent that
views espoused by Mr. McCartney do not constitute the official position
of the DNA, we wish to provide further clarity in this regard...

Press Conference with Opposition Leader Philip Brave Davis - Jun 4, 2019 - 11:30:28 AM
"PLP and Labour are one; we are joined at the hips" said PLP Leader, the
Hon. Philip Brave Davis, as he addressed the media during his monthly
press conference.
He noted the 1977 Memorandum of Understanding
between the PLP and Labour unions that paved the way for the modern
labour laws workers enjoy today, including agency shop.
He called
on the PLP to craft another MOU with the Labour Unions for the further
protection of the rights of and benefits for workers...

DNA: Budget 2019/20 – Much Ado About Nothing - May 30, 2019 - 11:25:29 AM
The Minister of Finance delivered his third Budget Communication in the
House of Assembly yesterday to a nation in desperate need of hope and
some positive news. Once again, the Free National Movement (FNM)
administration showed its lack of compassion and disconnection from the
plight of the masses. The delivery of the communication was both
uninspiring and underwhelming, while the extended rendition of shallow
pronouncements was painful to watch.
In a communication that fell
flat for most Bahamians, the government’s idea of positive news was the
continuous reminder...

Leader of the Opposition on 2019 Budget Communication - May 29, 2019 - 7:08:28 PM
The 2019 Budget Communication of the Minister of Finance
unfortunately continues a clear pattern of this Government of
mis-stating facts, falsifying statistics and just plain lying to
Bahamian citizens and to those who purchase and rate Bahamian Government
debt.
We know that the Minister of Finance has placed himself
under great pressure to deliver an unrealistic deficit reduction
programme. We know that his 60% VAT increase has only increased total
revenues by 16%...

DNA: Regressive fiscal policy hurting The Bahamas - May 29, 2019 - 3:35:15 PM
A recent report issued by the Tax Justice Network (TJN) placed The
Bahamas on another tax haven list. The Corporate Tax Haven Index (CTHI)
ranked our nation as number nine on an adverse list among ten
jurisdictions with corrosive corporate tax policies.
This
blacklist follows the passage of myriad legislation and implementation
of regulatory changes by the government to ensure compliance with
international standards. We have expended much time and resources on
being removed from lists produced by international agencies...

Statement from the Chairman of the PLP on Union Strike Vote - May 29, 2019 - 1:30:03 PM
It should not have come to this point where the Bahamas Hotel Catering
and Allied Workers Union feel that they need to take a strike vote in
order to get a just result in their contract negotiations.
Our
understanding is that the Government is not taking this matter seriously
and is not moving aggressively enough to get the parties to the table
and have this matter settled.
It appears to us, given the history
of the contract and the background of the lack of a livable wage in
many sectors in The Bahamas, that the fifteen per cent gratuity is a
sine qua non in the contract talks...

DNA:BPL saga continues to cost Taxpayers - May 27, 2019 - 1:18:19 PM
Following the unceremonious termination of the previous Board of Bahamas
Power and Light (BPL) amid allegations of political interference and
unethical behavior, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) called for a
swift and independent investigation into these matters in August 2018.
Nine months later, it remains unclear if and when the probe promised by
the Prime Minister will be completed and a report issued to the Bahamian
people.
The DNA notes the recent confirmation by the Attorney
General (AG) that the government has retained a local firm of private
lawyers to defend the $1.1 million lawsuit against the Minister of
Public Works filed by former directors of BPL...

DNA discourages Public Shaming via Social Media - May 15, 2019 - 3:15:49 PM
Recently, videos of a disturbing nature have been circulating depicting
our nation’s youth in a less than savory manner. We in the DNA implore
agents of the Department of Social Services to heighten their alert and
conduct investigations into the homes and environments of these young
individuals where and when necessary. Often, matters of this nature are
overlooked or taken for granted until it becomes a substantial problem
in our society that is beyond control...

As always I am grateful to God for
granting me this opportunity to stand in this place and contribute to
the building of this great country, The Bahamas.
Before I begin
my contribution, I want to use this opportunity to wish my closest
friend Lanecia Darville a Happy Birthday, she is like a sister to me, an

who, like myself, I am certain has much to offer in the building of
this Bahamas for the benefit of Bahamians...

DNA Mother's Day Message - May 12, 2019 - 2:35:36 PM
It’s that time of the year when we pause to pay homage to our mothers and salute the mother figures in our lives.
When
we reflect on our lives, many of us will acknowledge the many
sacrifices that our mothers made to ensure that we fulfil our God given
potential. Their sleepless nights, their constant prayers and their hard
work shaped us into who we have become.
As I look back on my own
life, I can truly say that my mother has been a source of inspiration
and a driving force for my success. However, the reality is that the
role of a mother is filled not just by biological mothers but also by
foster mothers...
