What is a chiropractic adjustment?

As a chiropractor for over 35 years I have administered by hand millions and millions of chiropractic spinal and extremity adjustments.   I remember my early days in the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and how we as students were lovingly guided into the hidden realm within the human body by countless hours of anatomy, human dissection, technique lessons along with case examples by clinicians and doctors from the field.

Chiropractors are trained extensively to do just that, adjust spinal vertebrae and the bones of the ribs, shoulders, hands, hips and feet.   Statistics show that there is much less likelihood of a stroke from a chiropractor adjusting your neck bones than there is from your taking aspirin or birth control pills.

Chiropractic adjustments are drugless and usually painless making them ideal for the elderly and for children.   They are cost efficient when compared to “what else is out there.”

So why have an “adjustment” at all?   Why have a chiropractic examination and receive manual adjustments of your bones?

Well the fact is our nerves nourish and they eventually must travel through or closely around the spine to the brain and back again on their journey to and from almost every tissue cell within your body.   Nerves have to do this for you to nurture the cells to health and that when healthy, all of the parts work all of the time.   None of the parts work without an intact nerve supply.

Stress on our bodies come from many unlikely sources but for now let’s think of the drawn up tight spinal column and frame of our body.   While in this condition of stress we give rise to restriction in the free flow of signals through our nervous systems.

Stress produces curves and kinks in the segments of our spine and body, our bony segments.   The kinks are called subluxations.   Look at postures to readily see this working against us.

As the stress draws the parts-up-tight the joints lose their range of motion, they stiffen and subluxate.   The young body becomes less supple and the subluxations put resistance on the nerves.   The loss of the sliding and gliding of our body’s joints makes us look and act old, and in fact we do rapidly age in this condition.

Our body’s nerves fail to nourish in the subluxated condition and when we ask our body to go to work a part may fail.

Most of us will then lose time from our work or life enjoyment and take stupefying drugs to quiet symptoms of pain and strain.   The parts fail firstly from the nerve pressures and restrictions from the subluxations.

Only the chiropractor locates and then painlessly, manually manipulates the bony parts back into position restoring range of motion of the joints and decreasing the resistance on the nerves.

The ensuing improved function, the parts working again, is health.

And sure, the millions upon millions of patients that visit their chiropractor regularly know this and will readily tell you about it.

But other than by a chiropractic patient you won’t usually be told about the chiropractors, adjusting only by their hands.   Nor will you receive   chiropractic information or adjustments from your medical doctor.

Neither will you receive an adjustment from a physiotherapist or any other health professional.   And whatever faith you may put in their drugs and methods they are not chiropractors and are not licensed and trained to diagnose and then administer the safe, hand only, high-velocity-low-impact dynamic health restoring adjustment of the chiropractor.
