Our Greatest Threat Is Our Only Hope...

In the near future humanity has been ravaged by a mutated fungal disease that turns its victims into flesh-eating monsters without free will. A small group of children who seem to be immune to the effects are being studied in an army base to find a cure, but when the base falls those who escape the attack soon discover that they are humanity’s last hope.

Melanie is one of the second generation “hungries” being studied by the army who happens to be inquisitive, imaginative and the key to creating a vaccine against the mysterious fungal disease. Helen Justineau is a teacher at the army base who takes the children through their lessons and has formed a bond with Melanie with knowledge of what could happen if she is not careful. Sgt. Eddie Parks is the highest ranking officer at the installation and is constantly on edge around the second generation “hungries” who he has been put in charge of guarding. Dr. Caroline Caldwell is the brilliant scientist who has made it her life’s mission to curing the contagious fungal disease and will do whatever is necessary to the test subjects for that cure.

The Girl With All The Gifts is an incredible surprise as it gives us an intensive look at a world made alien by a rampant fungal disease. This version of the zombie apocalypse is interesting in the detail they choose to focus on with the world at large and the actual type of zombies that now inhabit it. I have never read the book of the same name that it is based on, but after watching the film it will be the next bit of reading material I order. Sennia Nanua is an astonishing talent for one so young and being that this is her first full length feature just makes it all the more an impressive feat of acting with the more seasoned professionals. Colm McCarthy’s directing is also to be praised as this is his second full length feature after years of being a director of television series. I found Mike Carey’s screenplay to be reminiscent of Richard Matheson’s I am Legend if told from the perspective of the infected who were now the majority in the world. This is an intriguing story that is quite thought-provoking in its presentation of the subjects in this horror scenario. I rate this movie a rating of 4 out of 5.
