There Are No More Patriots, Just Rebels And Tyrants...

An extreme sports athlete turned government operative must come out of a self-imposed exile to stop a new threat to the free world by way of a device that can weaponize satellites. For his mission to be a success he must assemble a group of thrill-seekers with special skills that will allow him to retrieve the device and expose those responsible for its use in the killing of one of his closest friends.

Xander Cage is the original xXx agent recruited to handle threats that were beyond the purview of standard undercover operatives and is now looking for his friend’s killer. Serena Unger is a mysterious thrill-seeker with ties to Xiang who finds Xander intriguing as she tries to figure out where her loyalties lie in the conflict she finds herself caught fighting in. Jane Marke is a high level CIA agent who has taken over the xXx program in order to track down the Pandora’s Box device that was used to kill the former head of the program. Xiang is the highly skilled secret agent whose team confiscated the Pandora’s Box device, but there is more to his motives than are first suspected by those trying to appropriate it from him.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is an old school action style motion picture that brings to mind classic Asian cinema from the 90's. The fun in watching this sequel is how over the top the action set pieces are with a certain level of frenzy mixed in with subject matter that takes itself seriously but not to much so. Donnie Yen is the best thing about this movie as every action scene he is in is a true joy to watch with an energy that fits the tone of the film perfectly. It is good to see D. J. Caruso directing something with action again that brings him back to the type of television series he directed so well at the start of his career. Instead of being an extreme sports drink commercial take on the Jame Bond franchise like the original, this is more of an extreme sports drink advert take on the Mission Impossible movies.

I rate this movie a 3 out of 5.
