The crew of a damaged starship encounter an alien warrior race after being marooned on a distant planet during a surprise attack. They must now band together with a survivor of a previous attack on the planet to stop the aliens from releasing a doomsday weapon on the galaxy.

Captain James T. Kirk is the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise who is interested in the Vice Admiral position at the Starbase Yorktown as he struggles to find meaning in his 5 year mission. Kalara is a refugee found in an escape pod who claims her ship is stranded on a planet called Altamid in a nebula and needs the help of the Enterprise crew in a rescue. Jaylah is a scavenger who previously escaped the internment camp run by the warlord of the planet and has taken refuge in the wreck of an older model Starfleet vessel. Krall is the warlord commander of an alien swarm on Altamid who is looking to retrieve an artifact called the Abronath from the Enterprise in order to cause the dismantling of the Federation.

Star Trek Beyond is a bold step in the motion picture division of the rebooted franchise as it tackles an original villain not connected with any of the previous series. This installment is a fitting part of the 50th celebration of Star Trek as it perfectly embodies the spirit of adventure and exploration that was the foundation of the original series. The returning cast does a great job of portraying the feel of a crew 3 years into a 5 year mission, but I have to say that Sofia Boutella shows potential in her part as Jaylah and I hope to see her character fleshed out in future sequels. Justin Lin does a phenomenal job directing this third movie of the reboot with Simon Pegg & Doug Jung knocking it out of the park in the script department. I am aware of Anton Yelchin’s car related death before the release of the film casting a bit of a shadow on the production especially with the new director dealing with a similar tragedy on his previous movie, but this entry to the Star Trek universe does the late Gene Roddenberry proud.

I rate this a 4 out of 5.
