Longtime Grand Bahama resident, Barbara Chester, who brought the community together to create The Grand Bahama Labyrinth—a sacred and spiritual gathering place of contemplation and walking meditation—has been honored with the placement of her portrait, painted by local artist Claudette Dean, installed in The Garden of The Groves’ replica of the island’s first chapel, atop a spot overlooking the healing plantings, trees, and statuary surrounding the entrance to The Grand Bahama Labyrinth.

The large oil painting by Ms. Dean was a gift from Erika Gates,
owner and president of Garden of the Groves. Barbara and Erika worked long hours together in the early days of the Gardens’ with re-opening and renovations following the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005...

The nation's leader Prime Minister Perry Christie and Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister, Fred Mitchell were pleased to learn that the majority of full time employees at the Grand Bahama Shipyard are now Bahamians and gradually the demand for foreign labour is decreasing. 

The Grand Bahama Shipyard's COO, Reuben Bryd, Director of Finance and IT, Linda Turnquest, and Facility and Maintenance Manager, Marvin Basden, spent a full day in New Providence on Monday.  The senior management team made courtesy calls on Prime Minister Christie, Minister Mitchell, and Bahamas Civil Aviation Director, Captain Patrick L. Rolle.

Freeport, Bahamas - The Lois Seiler Academy of Dance shone brightly last weekend with dancers showing off their sensational skills as audience members filled the theatre with applause for the celebration another successful production.  The Lois Seiler Academy of Dance celebrated 44 years of excellence and dance. Lois Seiler flawlessly managed to keep all of her dances fresh and original, with an enjoyable, fast paced, show that sold out both performances.


The production featured over 100 dancers performing ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and modern ballet. Rico Thompson and Scarlett Wilson returned...

Freeport, The Bahamas - Photographer and resident of Grand Bahama Island, Donald Pecora captured this beautiful image of the sunset over the container port area of Freeport today which was taken from an apartment deck off the Coral Beach area. The photographer was surprised he could even see that far from the south side of the island.

When asked by The Bahamas Weekly whether he'd altered his shot in any way he responded, "I just
zoomed in and sharpened up! And the sun was behind this huge cloud in the background until just before settling. I never knew we could see the port before this..."

Freeport, Bahamas - This Christmas marks the fourth successive year, the Grand Bahama Community has celebrated Joie de Noel on the Labyrinth in the Garden of the Groves. A musical depiction of the Christmas story on the Sacred Path which, at Christmas-time symbolically represents the long arduous journey taken by Mary and Joseph as they made their way to Bethlehem on that first Christmas

Barbara Chester, founder of the Labyrinth, warmly welcomed a good crowd and briefly spoke of love, truth, and peace, the true gift of Christmas....

Freeport, Bahamas - Boxing Day afternoon was the perfect time to relax and truly appreciate the blessings of Christmas.   The musical recital given by Elizabeth Reian Bennett, Grand Master of the Japanese shakuhachi bamboo flute at the Garden of the Groves was a true gift to those in attendance The shakuhachi is an unusual instrument which 'sang' pulsating music with a vibrating 'voice', a perfect instrument to create and enhance a sense of peace and relaxation. The flute came from China to Japan in the eighth century, and the Buddhist Monks have used it from that time as they walked their Labyrinths in meditation.

The afternoon concert started in the beautiful little Chapel, which was full for the occasion.  The audience were greeted at the door by Erika Gates...

Takeda Mitsuyo, in Tokyo.

Dear Facilitators,

It is so encouraging to know so many groups walked and will walk the labyrinth in reaction to the disaster in Japan. 

It has been three weeks since the earthquake, tsunami, and the nuclear plant’s accident. The Japanese school year starts from April. 7000 kids moved out of prefectures they lived in, and joined different schools and new friends...

We have just received an urgent appeal from the famous Scientist, Emoto Masaru, whose message is written and on Youtube.  I invite you to watch, read and to join in a short but very important ceremony at 12 noon tomorrow, Thursday, 31 March 2011.  wherever you are, please put your hands together in prayer and , from your heart, say the following words...

Freeport, The Bahamas - A number of persons turned out this past Sunday morning, March 20, at the Garden of the Groves for the Labyrinth walk in prayerful meditation.

According to Ms. Barbara Chester as she addressed the participants just before they walked, the meditation was on love to share with others, honouring those who survived the devastation in Japan and other lands in the Pacific.

She told the gathering, “Today, the Spring Equinox has been appropriately chosen for special Prayer Walks to take place on all Labyrinths around the World..."

Freeport, The Bahamas - Last Friday afternoon, Japan suffered an 8.9 earthquake followed by a devastating tsunami. Several thousand people were reported dead, tens of thousands missing and the threat continued with at least one nuclear power plant in danger of a meltdown.

We, on Grand Bahama Island will be participating in this important Global event, with a simple ceremony and facilitated Walk on our Grand Bahama Labyrinth in the Garden of the Groves at 9.00a.m.on Sunday, March 20th 2011...

Freeport, Grand Bahama - On March 8th, the 100 anniversary of International Women's Day, a small group of women, men and children in The Bahamas met at the Labyrinth at the Garden of the Groves to commemorate the occasion by sharing in a drink, some words, and then gathered for a photo on a small bridge within the Groves to assist in the call for an end to war and to demonstrate the bridge of peace and development for the future.

The event, Join Women on the Bridge, was organized by Women for Women volunteer, Lynette McInnes. After the commemorative photo on the bridge was taken, everyone walked to the Garden Cafe to sign the peace banner...

Freeport, Bahamas - On February 25th and 26th Grand Bahama’s Dutch Diva, Marjoke Muller and her friends once again brought Song and Dance to the Labyrinth at the Garden of the Groves, the heart of Grand Bahama Island.  This magical twilight garden has been further enhanced by additional diffused lighting illuminating the beautiful trees and shrubs.  

Marjoke’s Show was entitled, Around the World in Song and Dance.  It was exactly that.   We were taken on a journey through America, Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Holland and even to India where we were enthralled by a mystical performance of Bollywood by the Bahamas Dance Theatre...

The Bahamas - On March 8th, women, men, and children from Freeport, Grand Bahama Island are set to make history by joining together on the Garden of the Groves’ Labyrinth and Bridge to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.   We will be calling for an end of violence against women in war-torn countries across the world, including Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, two of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman.

Last year over 20,000 people took part in the first ever global Join Me on the Bridge campaign with 119 events including in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kosovo, Canada, the United States and The Bahamas.

Freeport, Bahamas - The Grand Bahama Labyrinth presents Marjoke and Friends next production of Around the World in Song and Dance on Friday, February 25th and Saturday, February 26th. Both performances start at 7pm on the Labyrinth.

Enjoy a multicultural taste of songs and dance from around the world with mini-cine and after show dancing for the entire family.
