ORG: Integrity Commission/Ombudsman Bill must be prioritized - Sep 19, 2018 - 12:09:38 PM

As The House of Assembly prepares to reopen session today, The Organization for Responsible Governance (ORG), a not-for-profit aimed at good governance, education reform, and economic development, is probing the status of the Integrity Commission and Ombudsman Bills, tabled in parliament nearly a year ago. 

“It  has been an eventful summer; headlines such as the BPL Board dismissals and the accusations in recent high profile corruption cases reinforce the need to put best practice anti-corruption measures in place such as the Integrity Commission and Ombudsman,” said Matt Aubry, Executive Director of ORG.

Defence Force’s Harbour Patrol Unit Makes Arrest - Sep 15, 2018 - 11:32:09 PM

Two American citizens are in Police custody after they were found in possession of suspected drugs and weapons by members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Marines on Friday afternoon.

While on patrol shortly after 12:00 pm, Patrol craft P-115, coxswained by Leading Seaman William Burns conducted a routine boarding and search of a blue and white Contender in the area of Nassau Harbour east. Results of the search uncovered a small quantity of suspected marijuana onboard. Further search of the vessel also uncovered 2 pistols, 1 shotgun and a total of 262 rounds of ammunition...

Family and friends expressed gratitude for assistance provided by members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force in conducting an extensive search for Ms. Amber Weech, who was reported missing since Wednesday.

Immediately, after receiving information of her last known whereabouts, members of the Defence Force’s Coastal Security team assisted family and community members in carrying out an area-wide search for Ms. Weech. Nine marines from the Royal Bahamas Defence (RBDF) Force recently completed six months of intensive dive operations to become the first RBDF certified Divemasters under the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) program

Defence Force responds to Sightings of Poachers - Aug 27, 2018 - 7:55:15 AM

On Thursday August 23, the Defence Force received information that two foreign vessels were spotted by Bahamian fishermen and locals around 10:00 am approximately two nautical miles east of Cape Santa Maria, Long Island. An RBDF patrol craft that was in the southern Bahamas was directed to investigate the report following a confirmed sighting by an RBDF aircraft, which was on patrol in the area.

Under the command of Senior Lieutenant Grere Martin, the RBDF aircraft sighted the reported vessels near Long Island later that day.  Subsequently, HMBS Lignum Vitae, under the command of Senior Lieutenant Bertram Bowleg, intercepted and boarded the vessels off Long Island later that evening...

Two individuals are counting their blessings after they were rescued from waters near Potters' Cay on Thursday afternoon by Royal Bahamas Defence Force Military Divers and Marines attached to the Defence Force's Harbour Patrol Unit.

Shortly after 4:00 pm Thursday, two Bahamian occupants – an adult male and a young child were riding a Jet Ski on the eastern side of Potters' Cay Dock when they lost control, causing the Jet Ski to overturn. At a Special sitting of Magistrate Courts on Friday past at the Remand Centre at the Department of Correctional Services, 46 Dominicans changed their Pleas from "Not Guilty" to that of "guilty" on charges related to illegal fishing in Bahamian waters.

RBDF recovers Stolen Vessel with RBDF Drone - Jul 30, 2018 - 6:25:51 PM

Coral Harbour Base, (RBDF): The Royal Bahamas Defence Force tracked and recovered a stolen vessel earlier this morning.

After receiving information from the Lyford Cay Security of a 21-ft blue and white open-hull pleasure craft being stolen from the Lyford Cay Marina around 3:00 a.m. this morning, a search was immediately conducted by Marines from the Defence Force Commando Squadron.

The search and recovery exercise later became a joint operation when the Royal Bahamas Police Force informed the Defence Force of the craft's location in the Seabreeze area. The Marines, aided by the Defence Force’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), were then deployed to the area...
