Alpheus Finlayson to speak at the next Bahamas Historical Society meeting

Nassau, Bahamas - Thursday 24th June at 6pm – Alpheus Finlayson – From Vancouver to Athens: 50 years of Bahamian Track and Field

At our museum corner of Shirley Street and Elizabeth Avenue Parking at the ex Psilinakis carpark north of the museum on Elizabeth Ave.  Entrance via First Caribbean Bank on Shirley Street.

Alpheus ‘Hawk’ Finlayson, a former long and triple jumper, IAAF Council member since 1999, and CACAC executive since 1993was first  released in The Bahamas on September 28, 2009 at the National Art Gallery.

In 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games were held in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

The cover includes The First Team, 1954 British Empire Games, Vancouver- Cyril Johnson, Irrington Isaacs, and Leonard Dames with BAAA President Cyril Richardson in the Opening Ceremonies, Tommy Robinson in Cardiff Wales, The 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, Frank Rutherford winning the first Bahamian Olympic medal in Track and Field, a Bronze medal in the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona, Troy Kemp, winning the Gold medal in the High Jump 1995 IAAF World Championships, Gothenburg, Sweden, Avard Moncur winning the 2001 IAAF World Championships in the 400m in Edmonton, The Golden Girls in Sydney, and Tonique Williams-Darling winning the Gold in the 400m in Athens.

The book is 220 pages with over 120 photos. It covers every international competition the Bahamas would have competed in. All the medalists and finalists are included, as well as some participants who would have not made the finals.

Minister Desmond Bannister says "This is the authoritative work on Bahamian athletics. Alpheus has painstakingly researched our country's involvement in international competition, and has produced a wonderful encyclopedia, which is readable and immensely enjoyable."
