Are we entering a new era of menswear where men are no longer going to take a backseat to women when it comes to personal style? Colombian fashion designer David Alfonso believes that daring is now part of the male identity and he certainly delivered a bold, yet tailored look with his autumn winter 2014 collection label Eriko at Vancouver Fashion Week.

With a background of interior design, 28 year old David Alfonso has been heavily influenced by the bold and colorful men fashion trends of Japanese designers.

“Over the top” is how he describes Eriko fashions. “Men really want to wear these clothes. I want to redefine masculinity,” David Alfonso.  His mens collection was certainly dramatic with bold floral prints, multi-star and snakeskin patterns and brightly colored solid three piece suits with matching capes.

Menswear traditionally evolves much slower than women’s and we are witnessing a new crop of young talented designers who are giving men more options when it comes to fashion.

For women,  Alfonso featured attractive bright colored pattern dresses and separates, but he told me that designing for men was his first love.

“I design for a modern man who is love with fashion,” says David Alfonso.

Flamboyancy in menswear has become more mainstream in the past two years, as men are more willing to push the fashion envelope to express their individuality.

True to David Alfonso’s design spirit, Eriko is a daring collection which we will see soon on the streets of Miami, Tokyo and main street USA.
