Keep an eye open over the next few months and you’ll notice a playful new twist on a spring fashion classic. With the onset of the warmer weather, women will be immersed in the graphic lines, zigzagging patterns and dynamic colour combinations of bold, bright stripes. This represents a fascinating evolution from a look that dominated women’s wear just a few seasons ago when European luxury designers presented more traditional patterns such as houndstooth and pinstripes.

The Italian house of Salvatore Ferragamo is world renown for feminine elegance and I, along with many of my fashion industry colleagues, were pleasantly surprised by their fabulously colourful pink and blue striped, off-the-shoulder ruffled sundress. Youthful and exuberant, this refreshing new direction from the Ferragamo brand is something we haven’t seen in a long while.

Missoni (below, left), well known for its chevron stripes, has mixed it all up this spring with blocks of abstract stripes in compelling color combinations on lightly rippled knits and silks. Overlaid multi-colour stripes on fluid knee-length and maxi dresses offer women a versatile silhouette for the warmer days ahead.

Bold striped dresses in bright colours that pay homage to Italy is what Dolce & Gabbana (below middle) introduced for women this season. Melding vintage silhouettes with iconic Italian images, Domenic Dolce and Stefano Gabbana offer their exclusive clientele a brash and free-spirited sexines. After all, that’s what Italian woman are all about!

With boldly coloured stripes, checks and transparencies, Stella McCartney’s single strap tube dresses (below, right) offer a youthful athletic look – sporty yet very sexy - that will take you from the beach volleyball court to the rooftop pool lounge in effortless style.

It’s plain to see that, whether horizontal, vertical, thick, thin or even abstract, the daring stripes in audacious colours emerging from the European runway collections will be one of the dominant trends this season.

Hang up your houndstooth and put away your pinstripes, because spontaneous and sexy dresses in eye-catching stripes is the new look for spring.
