The Pantone Color of the Year announcement is closely observed by the fashion and design industry as their decision can have influences on consumers for many years.

For the first time ever, the Pantone Color of the Year is a pair of inviting shades, Rose Quartz a pale pink, and Serenity a baby blue hue for 2016.

What first comes to mind with these two pastel colours is that it’s all about babies, but Pantone denies that. More so, it’s probably the turmoil we face in our world today that has Pantone selecting a harmonious pairing of colors for warmth and tranquility as we enter the New Year.

With women fashions, we have seen a strong push with Rose Quartz starting with Dolce & Gabbana’s Winter 2016 collection now appearing in stores as reported on Style Drama last March.

The combination of both hues can been seen with fashion designer Emilo Pucci, Leanne Marshall, BCBG and Richard James. Playful yet sophisticated, this color duo can make a striking statement and paired with other mid-tones, including cooler greens and purples. Pair with Lime Popsicle and Silver for some splash and sparkle, or add Fondue Fudge, which makes for a rich background.

When it comes to men in America, Rose Quartz will be limited to shirts and ties. While in Europe you are going to see a whole lot more as men are more comfortable with pastels, especially in Italy.

Serenity, a baby blue is more complimentary with most skin tones and matches easily with most wardrobes.

I sensed earlier this year that baby blue was going to be the new color for men’s fashions. Last May, I ordered a custom tailored baby blue blazer with a windowpane pattern. Nice to know that my fashion instincts keep me in tune with style trends.

This softer take on a colour combination also reflects on the gender blur that we are experiencing in fashion and lifestyles. A generation that is less concerned with typical gender and wanting to express themselves in their own way.

In the past, Pantone Color of the Year has been bold, such as Radiant Orange in 2014. So this coming year we move towards a softer side in colour reflecting a shifting trend with fashion.
