The word Marsala originates from a region in Sicily which produces a naturally robust and earthly red wine. Back in the late 60’s is when Marsala first appeared as a hue on the European fashion scene, which brings back fond memories as I grew up with this color palette. I affectionately remember my mother purchasing me an Austrian made parka in Marsala to wear while traveling the narrow cobblestone streets of Paris on the back of a scooter.

Nature-like neutral

The versatility of Marsala allows it to make an elegant statement on its own or as a compelling accent when paired with many other colors. This shade works well with neutrals such as navy and black, plus warmer taupes and grays. But it’s also sultry when mixed with greens in both turquoise and teal, and blues in a more vibrant range.

My prediction is that consumers will be attracted to this earthy brown tone as it gives us the feeling of being in touch with the environment along with a flare of sophistication.

Vivid prints

For several years, fashion designers have brought us prints and patterns so watch for variations of this hue that will undoubtedly carry into men’s and women’s fashions.

Lookout for related shades with fashion accessories such as jewelry, handbags, hats, footwear plus the ever-growing wearable technology.

Beauty

Marsala is flattering against most skin tones. Sultry and subtle it will appeal to many women as this year’s beauty colour, providing vibrant highlights for cheeks, and captivating colour for nails, shadow lips and hair.

Home

Dramatic and at the same time grounding, the rich and full-bodied red-brown Marsala will bring color warmth into home interiors.

Glamour & luxury

Equally inspiring to men and women, Pantone color of the year Marsala offers up a subtly seductive shade. With a matte finish it highlights Marsala’s organic roots while adding sheen conveys a message of glamour and luxury.
