Pharrell Williams' increasing popularity from his ‘Happy’ soundtrack for the Despicable Me 2 movie is driving a resurgence for hats this summer, as his Vivienne Westwood’s Mountain hat worn at the Academy Awards last March may not suit everyone's style, you should consider a colorful vivacious fedora to compete your summer look.

“The look for summer is Havana style, bright and summery,” says Jessika Fortin, custom hatter merchant of Goorin Bros. in Yaletown Vancouver. “Think Cuba, vintage cars with a 50’s vibe.”

What excites me about Goorin Bros. neighborhood hat shops (and yes you can order online), is their diverse range of hat styles and colors.

For the ladies, consider the Mongo Santamaria, a wide brim straw coral colored fedora inspired by the tropics of Cuba.

The fedora was original designed in 1882 for women, first worn by actress Sarah Bernhart performing in the stage play “Fedora” by the French author Victorien Sardou in the US.

Prince Edward of Great Britain - no direct relation to myself, his loss - began wearing a fedora in 1924 which was the start of a long history as a symbol of manhood.

In the mid-20’s it was associated with the Prohibition and gangsters, then popularized in the movies of the 40’s and 50’s by Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant and old blues eyes himself.

More recently the look has been driven by music performers Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Brittany Spears.

Wearing a fedora offers you tons of style, class and most importantly confidence, as I always believe, that is what fashion is all about.

For men, try on the Sanchez wide brim fedora in cool blue or a Habana pork pie narrow brim for those lazy days of summer.

Select Goorin Bros. locations offers a customize hat service for those special occasions such as weddings, garden parties or the upcoming weekend derby. Goorin Bros. of Pittsburg Pennsylvania dates back to 1895, where they handcrafted beaver hats the old fashion way on custom wooden blocks.Their goal is to bring back neighborhood hat shops, where buying a hat is as personal and special an experience as it was at the turn of the century.

For this summer’s go-to look, visit Goorin Bros. hats shops online or visit one of their 29 locations across Canada and the U.S. in New York, Charleston, New Orleans, San Francisco and Vancouver. Goorin Bros. on Facebook.
