“We are no longer puppets being manipulated by outside powerful forces; we become the powerful force ourselves.” - Leo Buscaglia

This week is a significant one in Bahamians history.  It was on this day 43 years ago that the course of Bahamian politics was changed forever.

The first of these life-changing events took place on January 10th, 1967.  This “Election Day” saw the Progressive Liberal Party become a viable political force as it tied The United Bahamian Party in seats won.  Sparking a series of events over the coming days that resulted in the second of these life-changing events.  On January 14th, 1967 the late Sir Lynden Pindling was sworn in as the first black Premier of The Bahamas - Ushering in “Majority Rule.”

Majority Rule Day was viewed by many as “Freedom Day.”  Yes, we were now free to determine our own political, social and economic destination - No longer limited by the color of our skin but now free to express our equality, with other Bahamians, “one man one vote.”

This struggle was not unique to the Bahamas but one faced by people of color the world over.  The Civil Right movement in the United States was at its peek and on January 15, we will celebrate the birthday of one of its greatest leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Forty-three years later as you look at your current circumstance, are you really experiencing “Majority Rule”?  The Merriam-Webster Dictionary give as one of its twenty definition of “Rule” this meaning- “the exercise of authority or control: Dominion.”

While you are free to express yourself politically and have done so every election since,
  1. Are you really in control?
  2. Are you really exercising control over your social and economic well-being?
  3. Do you have dominion over your circumstances?
  4. Or are you still allowing outside forces to control you?
After four decades and countless “billions of dollars” of foreign investments, eighty-five percent of our country’s wealth is still concentrated in the hands of the fifteen percent minority. So what is it that the Majority is ruling?

Our country still have persons that live in dehumanizing social conditions; still ravaged by crime and avoidable lifestyle diseases.  With the majority of persons still living from paycheck to paycheck and screaming for the government to give them a job.

While others have been able to experience upward mobility, they have still not achieved their potential as they struggle to avoid drowning in a sea of debt.  Screaming to be rescued from themselves!

Unfortunately, the solution to your problem is not the government or others; it lies in you ruling you!  Once you start ruling you, then your social and economic condition will start to change.  And when it does, then you will begin to achieve and enjoy the economic success that our forefathers envisioned and struggled to give us.

But, this can only happen if you begin today to take control of your two most valuable resources- your time and money.  That’s right, how you controlled your time and money accounts for where you are today.  So why don’t you begin to ensure that you are making the best use of both.

Secondly, you have to appreciate that “Wealth” comes from the growth of income producing assets – simply putting your money to work for you.  So, if you do not save apart of your income to invest, you will find it extremely difficult to accumulate wealth.  But if you put aside a part of your income consistently for investments you will find it’s very easy to generate wealth.

It’s very simple.  If you have no savings, then you can have no investment and your result will be no wealth creation because you can't invest what you don't have.  So the first step is to save some money!  Not every now and then, but consistently and systematically.

You should make it your business to save a portion of every paycheck you get this year.

If you earn you earned $100.00 each week and continue to spend the entire $100.00 every week then over time you will have nothing to show for you work.  Nothing!  Really what were you working for and who were you working for?  As you gave away all your money and paid everyone except yourself!

You can not continue treating your money like milk or else you will not be able to accumulating wealth.  So how do you start accumulating wealth?

Simply start controlling your expenses in a way that allows you to save a portion of all the money you earn.  No matter what, you should keep that commitment with yourself.  The commitment to hold on to your money so that you can begin to invest it.  It is a case of honoring you, and valuing yourself enough to believe that you have a future worth investing in.  Pick up a copy of “Taking Control of Your Money” workbook it’s a useful tool to help you get started.

Why don’t you decide this “Majority Rule Day” that you will change the course of your economic life by becoming apart of the minority who are achieving financial freedom.

All it takes is ruling you!
