The New Year brings new resolutions, physical, spiritual goals and the new Pantone color of the year! Pantone

The year 2010 was dominated by the color turquoise, Pantone’s elected hue for the year. A challenging global economic environment was the catalyst for choosing a color that evokes images of calm, escape and relaxation. Everything from shimmering eye shadows to oversized watches popped up in this bold hue. This year, the warmth and sunniness of honeysuckle, a reddish pink with blue undertones will be dominating color palettes.

According to Pantone’s press release, “In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum.”

According to Eiseman, honeysuckle it stimulating, yet not as aggressive or passionate as red. She describes the hue as complex, making it more grown up and sophisticated than simpler pinks.

Honeysuckle is already in heavy rotation on the red carpets. Celebrities from Claire Danes to Lea Michele donned gowns in variations of the hue for the Golden Globes. Trendsetters such as Elizabeth Hurley and Michelle Obama have also been photographed rocking this color.

Designers such as Badgley Mischka, Peter Som and Nanette Lepore featured the hue in their Spring 2011 collections. How will you incorporate this color into your wardrobe?

Honeysuckle is a complementary hue that can be worn by both men and women and works well for a wide range of age groups. It can be easily worked into your office and casual attire for daytime wear, as well as more dressed up looks for evening wear.

Honeysuckle pairs well with basic neutrals such as black, navy, charcoal and light to mid shades of gray. Wearing a honeysuckle colored button down under a heather gray pinstripe suit is a great way to add a pop of color to a traditional business suit, and this combination works just as beautifully on men as it does on women.

If you’re not afraid of color, consider pairing honeysuckle with a bronze green; perfect for cool spring looks in the coming months. A crisp white blouse paired with bold honeysuckle trousers and a delicate mossy green cardigan is a classic look perfect for cool spring days. Tone down a bright honeysuckle dress with a structured black, gray or navy blazer.

For those who are on the fence, honeysuckle is a great accent color you can pepper into many of your outfits to add a warm, sunny feel to them. A honeysuckle scarf worn near the face will brighten you up and add a complimentary glow to many skin tones. Classic Parisian brand Longchamp also offers its popular Le Pliage line of totes in a honeysuckle hue, perfect for housing all your necessities while out for the day.

In addition to bags, fashion jewelry such as oversized cascading earrings, statement necklaces and cocktail rings will all feature gems in honeysuckle. Jewelry is always a fun and inexpensive way to incorporate a new color into your wardrobe. Turn up the style factor on a little black dress with punchy honeysuckle hued jewelry and accessories.
Honeysuckle will also be a hot hue in cosmetics. Major cosmetics brands such as M.A.C. and Givenchy have introduced collections heavily based on variations of bright pinks. Honeysuckle lips and cheeks are sure to be a hot trend for 2011.

Many people, men and women alike have an aversion to wearing pink. However it is a very complementary color that adds a glow to almost all skin tones. Ease into incorporating the 2011 color of the year into your wardrobe with accessories. Before long, you’ll be ready to dive into this rich and sunny hue and may find yourself boldly rocking honeysuckle head to toe!
