The holiday season is here which means parties galore. Whether you have a ball to attend or a special party in the backyard, chances are the invitation stipulates some form of dress. From ‘Festive’ to ‘Creative Black Tie,’ here are some tips to help you decode those sometimes confusing dress codes this season.

White Tie

A ‘White Tie’ dress code calls for you to break out the big guns. This is the most formal evening dress code and is typically associated with ultra exclusive events such as a charity ball. Full length dresses including ball gowns are required for ladies. Depending on how formal the event is, you may want to cover the shoulders with a shawl or shrug as well. Long gloves are also a common accessory for this dress code.

Black Tie/Semi-Formal

Less formal than the ‘White Tie’ event, this dress code still calls for a long or full length evening gown. A variation of the typical ‘Black Tie’ is the ‘Creative Black Tie’ which requires something a little more interesting than your typical formal full length dress. Think a bold pattern or color – something with a little more personality.

These events typically start in the day and go ‘til night so an outfit that does double duty is appropriate. Here you can wear dresses that are not full length and have a little more personality than those for the more formal occasions. Feel free to wear a funky print or a daring silhouette such as a deep V-neck. A knee length embellished halter dress works well or opt for a pant suit with an elegant top. With cocktail attire you have a little more leeway to be creative in your look than with the more formal dress codes.

Smart Casual

Typically you’ll want to stay away from jeans for this one. An embellished maxi dress or a beautiful blouse paired with trousers are a few good options. A variation of the ‘Smart Casual’ dress code is ‘Festive’- which is seen a lot during the holiday season. This means you’ll want to wear something with a little sparkle. Think sequins which are a hot trend right now, or opt for bold jewelry or accessories – something that’s a step up from your typical attire for a weekend party.

The holidays are a great to time to dress up and spend your nights with friends and loved ones. Dress the part and have a ball this season!
