We’ve all experienced it at some point. A little extra weight around the midsection that makes dressing slightly more challenging. Whether you’ve recently noticed a little extra bulge in your tummy area or it’s been a figure challenge for you for a while there are ways to minimize your midsection with the clothes you wear.
The key to dressing for your figure is making your wardrobe work for you. Wearing clothing that plays up your assets and minimizes your flaws is the key to feeling confident and looking your best. With just a few fashion tips you can make worrying about your midsection a thing of the past.
Tip 1: Work your waistline
Ensure that the waistline of your trousers or skirt sits at the widest part of your midsection. This breaks up your midsection and helps to visually minimize your stomach.
Wearing your bottoms too high above the widest part of your midsection visually augments the size of your stomach and wearing them too low forces your stomach to bulge over.
Tip 2: Keep it simple
Wear your bottoms without the extra trimmings. Opt for flat front pants and side or back zippers that will add less bulk to your midsection and hips. Pants with front pockets, zippers and other extras in the front add bulk to your midsection, makes it appear larger and draws attention to it.

Tip 3: Wear your size
Fight the feeling to tent your extra weight with excessively baggy clothes. This makes you appear even larger. Wearing clothing that skims your figure and is neither too big or too tight is best.
Tip 4: Open necklines
Crew neck, turtleneck and other closed necklines make the neck appear shorter and makes the overall figure visually stout. Open necklines elongate the neck and help to make the entire figure appear leaner and longer.
Tip 5: Play up your assets
Wear clothing that draws attention to your face, upper body and legs. Accessorizing your neckline draws attention to your face and detracts from your midsection.
Trousers that skim the thighs and flare out slightly from the knees to the ankle help to balance out your frame and detract from an ample stomach.
Tip 6: Wrap it up
Even if you’re not keen on wearing dresses, the one dress you should have in your wardrobe is a wrap dress. A flattering open neckline accentuates the bust area and empire waist falls from the bust to the knees skimming the tummy and thighs. This creates a flattering silhouette on many figures and draws attention away from the midsection.

Tip 7: Don’t tuck it in
Resist the urge to tuck in your blouses. Blouses that hit your hip bone in jersey or crepe fabrics help to camouflage a large midsection. Avoid stretch fabrics that are clingy which will draw attention to unsightly lumps and bumps.
Tip 8: Stick to solids
Dark, solid colors are known to be slimming. To draw attention away from your midsection stick to rich solid hues for your blouses. Stay away from tops with large or busy patterns which will draw attention to a larger midsection.
You may not have your ideal body but that doesn’t mean you can’t look like you do. Stick to styles and silhouettes that play up your assets and subtle tips and tricks to camouflage your flaws.
