Once a year, fashion enthusiasts in many metropolitan cities worldwide are treated to the ultimate night out filled with late night shopping parties, celebrities, makeovers and complimentary gifts galore.

This year’s Fashion’s Night Out, held on Thursday September 8 coincided with my birthday. I took it as a sign from the fashion gods that perhaps it was time to add a few new pieces to my wardrobe arsenal. Then came the dilemma, where to shop locally?

Since this year didn’t find me in New York City trolling the streets of Madison Avenue hob-nobbing with the likes of Andre Leon Talley and Rachel Zoe and drooling over limited edition pieces, I decided to hunt for the best in what our local retail stores had to offer. I found a fashion gem in the newly opened retail store Play.

Located in the International Bazaar on Bay Street, Play officially opened it’s doors in June of this year and carries clothing, shoes and accessories. You can shop brands including Free People, Motel Rocks, DV by Dolce Vita and Kenneth Jay Lane at affordable price points ranging from $10 to $249.

Run by local fashion enthusiasts Karla Wells and Aliya Allen, the store carries items for every woman. Here’s a little more on Play from co-owner Karla Wells and her take on what’s hot for the fall season.

What type of woman shops at Play?

At PLAY we don't target one particular sense of style, we carry pieces that range from hippie to edgy and most things in between. Some looks require some suggesting, and once customers try certain pieces on they're sold. We always encourage our customers to take a hearty look while in store.

What items can we expect to shop for fall?

Fall this year is littered with lace and warm tones. Oranges, burgundies and earthy looks. Most of the designers we carry reside in regions that experience a true change in seasons so we've been mindful to carry pieces which suit our climate.

What are your top 3 fashion must-haves of the moment?

Native American and Western inspired pieces are huge right now, and we wouldn’t be a top notch boutique if we didn’t offer these items to our customers.

Three of our favorite pieces of the moment are:

  1. Moose skin moccasins. Moccasins are perfect for so many occasions ranging from work to the movies to Aura.
  1. The Long horn necklace by LAS Jewelry. This long necklace, features the mock skull of a texas longhorn cattle and comes in gold, and gun metal/silver – one look and you know it’s certain to be a conversation piece.
  1. The Cabin Fever Dress by For Love & Lemons (FLL). FLL is an Australian line, and is clearly inspired by life down under. This bell sleeve open back black dress is accented with antlers.
