It’s barely the end of February and you’re probably just wrapping your
head around what’s hot for spring, but the fashion world is already
excited about the new trends emerging for the fall/winter season.
Fashion
Week in New York City wrapped last week Thursday, here are the
highlights to keep in mind when you go fall shopping at the end of
summer.
Luxe Velvet
There is no other fabric that
is more synonymous with luxury than velvet. Slip on a sultry velvet
dress for evening wear or make a simple jeans and T-shirt more special
with a fitted velvet blazer. Thinking of this luxe fabric always makes
me smile. I designed the dress I wore for my high school prom and was
convinced that it was a shoe-in for best dress of the night.
Unfortunately, the winning dress was a black velvet number with a thigh
high split, totally inappropriate for a high school prom but I’m not
bitter!

Lipstick Red
The fall season is typically
filled with muted color palettes, but this year bold red popped out
amidst the blacks and nudes as the bright favorite. The little black
dress is being replaced by the little red dress. Sultry and sassy,
almost every designer showed a version of a sexy little red dress in
their collections. My favorites were from Marchesa. Delicate yet
fanciful, the little red dresses in this collection were made for the
ultimate girly-girl who loves delicate details.
Peplum
Peplum
is a short overskirt that is typically attached to a form fitting
jacket, blouse dress or skirt. It’s a great little detail that makes an
otherwise ordinary piece just a little more special. The added fabric
around the hips makes it great for those with a boyish figure as it adds
shape around the hips for an hourglass silhouette. Marc Jacobs, Preen
and Peter Som all incorporated this feminine silhouette in their
collections.
Tuxedo Chic
It seems Janelle Monae’s
affinity for the tuxedo as womenswear is finally going mainstream.
Designers from Jason Wu to Yigal Azrouel all showed chic versions of
this menswear inspired look for Fall. If you’re hesitant to wear a
complete tuxedo, incorporate aspects of this look such as a tailored
tuxedo blazer into your wardrobe.
